When asked about potential opponents, Terence Crawford mentioned Viktor Postol’s name second, right after Manny Pacquiao. “It’d be good,” Crawford told BoxingScene.com regarding a fight against Postol. “It’d be for The Ring magazine belt, the lineal title.” Postol was about a 3-1 underdog entering his fight against Argentine power puncher Lucas Matthysse, but the unbeaten Ukrainian out-boxed and dropped him, before eventually making Matthysse quit on one knee in the 10th round Oct. 3 at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.

This past weekend, boxing witnessed Viktor Postol midly upsetting Lucas Matthysse but the manner of making him quit was what was special. Outside Super Middleweight when Andre Ward is fighting there, the nations that make up the former Soviet Union are the dominant force in boxing above 154 lbs. right now. That dominion is moving down the scale. With Danny Garcia out of the division, many saw Lucas Matthysse as the man to beat at Jr. Welterweight. Ukrainian Viktor Postol did that and more on Saturday night, putting Matthysse on the deck and essentially making him quit.

By Francisco Salazar - CARSON, Calif. - Everything seemed aligned for Lucas Matthysse to win a world title belt on Saturday night. He was favored to defeat Viktor Postol, the mandatory challenger to the WBC 140-pound title, and have a possible fight lined up against Manny Pacquiao for early 2016. Viktor Postol must have not read those memos. Postol weathered through a barrage of thudding and hard shots from Matthysse to score a shocking 10th round knockout win before a boisterous crowd of about 5,800 at the Stubhub Center. With the win, Postol improves to 28-0, 12 KOs and captures the vacant WBC junior welterweight title. Matthysse drops to 37-4, 34 KOs. While Matthysse awaits another opportunity to fight for a world title (whenever that will be), Postol wins a world title after having to wait for Danny Garcia to defend the title against him. Garcia vacated the title belt and is now campaigning at 147 pounds. Matthysse was carrying momentum from the hard-fought decision win over Ruslan Provodnikov on April 18. Matthysse was viewed as the top 140-pound fighter and seemed like a shoe-in to defeat Postol. Early on, the fight seems to lack drama as the two fighters tied up often and there was no real ebb and flow to the fight. Matthysse tried to fight his way inside of Postol's reach, but would get held often, which prompted warnings from referee Jack Reiss.

Ukraine's Viktor Postol (28-0, 12KOs) made a big statement on Saturday night, when he knocked out heavily favored Lucas Matthysse in ten rounds to capture the vacant WBC junior welterweight championship at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. After the fight, Postol called for a unification with WBO champion Terence Crawford (26-0, 18KOs). Both Postol and Crawford are handled by Top Rank. Crawford returns on October 24th when he defends his belt against Dierry Jean of Canada.

Manager: Golden Boy's Mistake in Rejecting Provodnikov

Manager Vadim Kornilov believes Golden Boy Promotions made a big mistake in rejecting an offer to stage a Ruslan Provodnikov-Lucas Matthysse rematch. Matthysse won a close twelve round majority decision over Provodnikov in April. It was one of the better action fights of 2015. Kornilov, who manages Provodnikov, is also the guiding force behind newly crowned WBC junior welterweight champion Viktor Postol.

Fans are still stunned by Lucas "La Máquina" Matthysse (37-4, 34 KOs) by suffering a knockout loss in the tenth round to Viktor "The Iceman" Postol (28-0, 12 KOs) last night at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. Matthysse was fading in the eight round and Postol completely took over the fight. During an exchange at the end of the tenth, Matthysse got caught and went down, and he stayed down on a knee for the full count of ten.
