Marcos Maidana’s strong performance against Floyd Mayweather in May has raised the Argentine action fighter’s profile among the elite names in the sport in lieu of an immediate rematch with the pound-for-pound king.
Maidana’s longtime adviser, Sebastian Contursi, told BoxingScene.com about one bout he wouldn’t mind, considering the potential thawing of the promotional “Cold War” between Golden Boy and Top Rank: Manny Pacquiao.
“I was surprised lately because I heard Manny Pacquiao’s name in the mix with the situation between Golden Boy and Top Rank, but that’s something I need to discuss with Al Haymon,” Contursi said.
Contursi is meeting with co-adviser Al Haymon this week to discuss Maidana’s contract status with Golden Boy. However, the situation appears to be murky given Contursi stopping short of acknowledging that Maidana remains a Golden Boy fighter. Still, the prospect of Pacquiao and Maidana trading leather in an all-out slugfest would be must-see TV.
“When you talk about names like Pacquiao, who would say no?” Contursi asked. “Of course. Maidana deserves to belong in the first level. He’s been fighting great, great fighters.
“He deserves to face those names. Our priority is Floyd Mayweather, but if not, we need some big names, too.”
