Luis Collazo: record, next fight and profile →
ESPN’s lone linear telecast for August is now in search of a new chief support. A leg injury suffered by Jose Benavidez Jr. derailed plans for a welterweight crossroads showdown with former titlist Luis Collazo. The two were due to collide August 17 live on ESPN from Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles, Calif.
The soccer field will become a fistic battleground Saturday, August 17, as Jose Benavidez Jr. will battle former world champion Luis Collazo in a 10-round welterweight co-feature at Banc of California Stadium, the home of Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles FC. In the other co-feature, WBO junior featherweight champion Emanuel “Vaquero” Navarrete will make the second defense of his title against the undefeated Francisco “Panchito” De Vaca.
Brooklyn native and former welterweight world champion Luis Collazo kept his championship hopes alive with a split decision over Samuel Vargas (30-5-2, 14 KOs) in a 10-round welterweight brawl. The judges scored the bout as followed: 96-94 Collazo, 96-94 Vargas, and 98-92 Collazo. The 37-year-old Collazo (39-7, 20 KOs) battled Vargas in what was a phone booth battle, with little separating the two combatants.

Once upon a time, Luis Collazo believed his mid-March appearance on Madison Square Garden grounds would come in the form of a career-high payday versus pound-for-pound king Terence Crawford.

Samuel Vargas has had a lot of “pinch me” moments in his boxing career. From fighting on national television, to facing world champions, bringing a boxing show to his native Colombia, and headlining arena shows in his hometown of Toronto.
Michael “Mick” Conlan is set to paint the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden green on St. Patrick’s Day for a third consecutive year. The Belfast native, two-time Irish Olympian, and top featherweight prospect packed the Hulu Theater to the rafters in 2017 and 2018 and will return on Sunday, March 17 to face the battle-tested Ruben Garcia Hernandez in the 10-round main event.
As BoxingScene.com reported earlier today, former world champion Amir Khan is considering the possibility of accepting a $5 million guarantee to face WBO welterweight champion Terence Crawford. The fight would take place on March 23 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
