WBA cruiserweight champion Denis Lebedev dominated the action and stopped previously undefeated Lateef Kayode in eight rounds in Kazan, Russia. After a failed stint at heavyweight, where Kayode was stopped in one round by Luis Ortiz last September but then overturned when Ortiz tested positive for steroids, dropped back to cruiserweight for a title stint.
Cesar Cuenca and Eduard Troyanovsky are set to collide in a battle of unbeaten super lightweight boxers. Both fighters made weight for their title fight Wednesday evening in Kazan, Russia. Cuenca (47-0-0-2NC, 2KOs) weighed in at 139.2 lbs. for the first defense of the vacant super lightweight crown he won in a 12-round decision over Ik Yang on the road this past July in China. The career-best win marked his first fight outside of his native Argentina. He hits the road for the second straight time, once again facing an unbeaten local favorite. Troyanovsky weighed 139.3 lbs. for his first title fight. The 35-year old contender comes in riding a 12-fight knockout streak, including an impressive 8th round stoppage of Aik Shakhnazaryan in April, followed by a 3rd round knockout of Ronald Pontillas in a stay busy bout this past June.
A year ago, Russian prizefighting celebrated the 25th anniversary of its second birth. It was a formal date rather than a single memorable event. However, ever since his grand arrival onto the Russian fight scene - boxing/business tycoon Andrey Ryabinskiy has been turning local fistic game into a string of impressive festivities. On November 4, which is also (not accidently) the date of Russian National Unity, the World of Boxing promotional group (led by Ryabinskiy) will stage quite possible its greatest fight card in recent memory – and for the first time out of Moscow – in Kazan, Tatarstan. Two world title fights (alphabet versions) will be accompanied by a notable heavyweight event and two important cruiserweight collisions.
On November 4th, WBA cruiserweight champion Denis Lebedev (27-2) will face Lateef Kayode (21-0) at the Basket-Hall Arena in Kazan, Russia. BoxingScene.com recently spoke to the champion to get his thoughts on the fight and his future plans.
Promoter Greg Cohen has confirmed that his cruiserweight client, Lateef Kayode, is going to the division that brought him the most success. As BoxingScene.com previously reported, Kayode will challenge Denis Lebedev for the WBA championship on November 4th in Russia. The fight will co-headline with Alexander Povetkin's battle against Marisuz Wach.
Opponents were announced for the stellar ledger of the World of Boxing fight card on November 4 in Kazan, Russia. WBC/TBRB #1 rated heavyweight Alexander Povetkin (29-1, 21 KOs), a mandatory challenger for the WBC heavyweight title, will look to stay in a tip-top shape against rock-hard Pole Mariusz Wach (31-1, 17 KOs). Povetkin is coming off the first-round TKO over Mike Perez in the final eliminator this May. WBC #13 Wach’s only loss came against Wladimir Klitschko on a one-sided unanimous decision in November 2012. The Polish fighter is 4-0, 2 KOs, since that loss and an almost two-year long PED-induced layoff after that. He defeated Konstantin Airich and Gbenga Oloukun in 2015.
