One of the more anticipated fights in the middleweight division is going to fall in line in the next few weeks - if everything goes as planned.
On September 10th at the O2 Arena in London, IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight world champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (35-0, 32KOs) will defend his titles against IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook, who is heading up by two divisions.
The night before, on September 9th, Daniel Jacobs (31-1, 28KOs) will defend his WBA 'regular' middleweight title in a rematch with Sergio Mora at the Santander Arena in Reading, Pennsylvania.
If both Golovkin and Jacobs come out on top, the World Boxing Association is expected to order a mandatory fight between their two beltholders. At the start of this year, the World Boxing Association vowed to eliminate the clutter of multiple WBA champions within several notable divisions.
The 'super' champion at 160 is Golovkin, while Jacobs has the 'regular' belt. World Boxing Association President Gilberto Mendoza Jr. wants the two of them to face each other in order to establish a sole WBA world champion at 160-pounds.
If there are no complications next Saturday night, Golovkin's handlers are planning to schedule a third fight for the boxer, likely in November or December. Golovkin's promoter, Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions, would love to finalize a year-end battle with Jacobs.
"Look I have a lot of respect for Danny Jacobs. He had a tremendous knockout over Peter Quillin. He's got a fight coming up the day before Gennady fights, on September 9th. That's a fight that can be made if the WBA mandates it. That's a fight that can be made. That's a tremendous fight between two of the top middleweights in the world," Loeffler told BoxingScene.com.
"Gennady and Abel are focused on September 10th. They are laser focused on Kell Brook. It's my job to look ahead."
