Last week, former super middleweight champion Carl Froch was very critical of WBC/IBO/WBA/IBF middleweight king Gennady Golovkin (35-0, 32KOs) - stating that the unbeaten puncher was facing undersized competition and refusing to move up in weight to pursue bigger competition.
Golovkin and his camp have complained about their inability to securing opponents in the middleweight division.
For his upcoming return, on September 10th, Golovkin will defend his titles against IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (36-0, 25KOs), who is moving up by thirteen pounds to take the fight.
Brook came in the picture after fighters like Canelo Alvarez, Chris Eubank and Billy Joe Saunders fell through.
Froch is not a fan of the fight, but he's not impressed with Golovkin's record and believes Brook will give him a lot more trouble than many people would expect.
“He should pick on someone his own size, and if he can’t get fights at middle, why doesn’t he move up? He gave Canelo stick for fighting Khan, who was smaller,” Froch told Boxing News.
"I genuinely think Brook will give him far more trouble than anyone has done before and more than anyone is giving him credit for,” said Froch. “Look at Golovkin’s CV, there’s no one on there. In terms of talent, Brook will be the best fighter he’s fought. Golovkin’s dangerous, a big puncher and he knocked out Bute in the amateurs so he can fight, but don’t be surprised if Brook gives him a really hard fight and goes the distance.”
Golovkin's promoter, Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions, says Froch had his chance to face GGG last year - and rather than fight he decided to retire. Golovkin was willing to face Froch at his weight of 168-pounds, and he was willing to travel over to the UK to give him the home field advantage.
"Carl, after posting pictures saying he was too big and too strong for Gennady - decided to retire. You can't force these guys to get in the ring with Gennady," Loeffler said.
