If Floyd Mayweather Jr. (49-0, 26KOs) is looking for a nine figure payday, there is only one man that can bring him that kind of money, according to veteran trainer Abel Sanchez.
Sanchez, who trains WBC/WBA/IBF/IBO middleweight king Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (35-0, 32KOs), strongly believes his fighter is the only candidate who would bring Mayweather a monster amount of revenue.
Mayweather announced his retirement from boxing last September. In several recent interviews, Mayweather says he is "50-50" on returning to the ring in the fall.
Mayweather claims he is seriously considering the possibility of a fantasy boxing match with popular UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor. Very few believe that fight will ever happen and UFC's President Dana White has yet to hold a single discussion on the subject.
Most boxing insiders view WBC welterweight champion Danny Garcia as the actual frontrunner to fight Mayweather in a comeback fight.
Garcia would be a huge underdog in the contest, which in turn would affect the event's revenue.
In the opinion of Sanchez, there is only one active fighter who can help generate a nine figure revenue stream, and he won't be a big underdog.
"Gennady Golovkin, there’s nobody else. He’s already beaten Canelo, he’s already beaten the other guys in that weight. A Danny Garcia fight is not something the public wants to see. Thurman and Porter have yet to fight, a who knows what kind of fight that’s going to be, and I don’t think that’s even remotely possible for that kind of payday," Sanchez told On The Ropes Boxing Radio.
"It has to be somebody who is at the top, and unfortunately for Mayweather, there’s nobody at 147 or 154 that’s going to give him that kind of payday. If Golovkin is able to get down to 154lbs and they make that kind of fight, I think Golovkin is the only one right now that he hasn’t beaten that would give him that chance to make that kind of money."
