Mike Alvarado Tops Martinez; Marroquin Bounces Back

•Jul 30, 2011

By Jake Donovan - Mike Alvarado inched closer towards title contention after his 10-round decision win over Gabriel Martinez on Saturday evening. Scores were 100-89, 100-90 and 99-90 in their Fox-Sports televised main event, which aired live from the Softball Country Complex in Denver, Colorado. Chants of “303” filled the arena in honor of the Denver area code and acknowledgment of Alvarado representing his hometown. The undefeated 140 lb. contender didn’t disappoint in the slightest, coming flying out of the gate with an opening round knockdown. Martinez bounced back and actually held his own in the second, but never to where Alvarado didn’t dictate the terms of the bout. The hometown chants once again picked up, though would eventually taper off once it was sensed that an early night wasn’t in store.

DENVER – Undefeated Top-10 junior welterweight contender MIKE ALVARADO has stripped off the World Boxing Council’s (WBC) Continental Americas super lightweight title he was scheduled to defend on Saturday night in his north Denver homecoming fight against former Méxican welterweight champion Gabriel Martinez. Alvarado had captured the vacant WBC Continental Americas title in his previous fight, in May, via a third-round stoppage of Ray Narh (25-2, 21 KOs), who had entered that fight rated No. 6 by the WBC and was riding a seven-year, 15-bout winning streak, with 12 of those victories coming by knockout.

Mike Alvarado Feeling A Mile High About Homecoming

By Jake Donovan - It’s been more than two years since Mike Alvarado has enjoyed the luxury of plying his trade in front of a hometown crowd. Given his career progress since then and the lack of substantive explanations (at the time) surrounding two separate breaks from the ring, you’d think he was stuck in a time warp. There’s nothing you can do about the past, so instead the undefeated super lightweight contender turns to the future. The next step forward takes place this weekend when he faces Gabriel Martinez in their Fox Deportes-televised main event live from the Softball Country Arena in Denver, Colorado. The fight will be his fourth in the past eight months as his handlers have done their best to make up for lost time. The former high school wrestling standout had only fought once in an 18 month span interrupted by two separate trips to prison for probation and parole violations. It’s been smooth sailing ever since, though what Alvarado (30-0, 22KO) has yet to endure in his return to the ring is a formidable challenge. His past four fights have lasted a combined 12 rounds, including a third round stoppage of Ray Narh this past May on the pay-per-view undercard of Manny Pacquiao’s decision win over Shane Mosley. Ever the gamer, he’s hoping that pattern changes this weekend and that his opponent’s performance matches the scouting report.

Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas - Both Mark Melligen and Gabriel Martinez fought as if they realized this was a crossroads fight. The action was spirited between the southpaw Filipino Melligen and the right hander Martinez, with Melligen being the faster counter puncher to Martinez' attacks. For the most part, Melligen was able to outbox Martinez with crisp counter lefts but Martinez kept coming often landing lead rights.

Earlier this week, some pretty solid sparring took place at Floyd Mayweather's personal gym in Las Vegas as welterweight contender Mark Melligen continued to push towards his February 19th showcase at the Mandalay Bay by engaging in some action with one of the area's top middleweight amateurs, Kevin Newman. Melligen fights on the Fernando Montiel-Nonito Donaire undercard against Gabriel Martinez and his work today with Newman was the type of spirited fire he needs ensure he is ready for that assignment.
