  • 1st trip to a boxing gym.

well today I decided to say what the hell, called the place around 12:00 and they told me to come in at 2. I get there a little late cuz it was hard to find (I don't know the 'hood) and saw an old man comin out the door. I was still lost and didn't even find the correct gym I was lookin for and I figured this old timer could help me out. I said,' excuse me sir, do you know where 1400 N. 14th st boxing gym is' and he looked me up and down and said,'We got boxin here, U ever fought?' I said no, he asked me what I wanted to do and I told him I just wanted to learn the skills and maybe compete someday...I could tell this guy had been thru some wars...I forgot his name but he has a minor slur. But he moves pretty well and thinks okay from what I can see...His nephew, a fighter, was tellin me how some cat was gettin loud on the court nearby the gym and the coach went over there to tell em to quiet down, one of the b-ballers said '**** YOU OLD MAN' and ol' coach dropped the guy with one shot at age 65. He told me to come back at six, so for three and a half hours, I waited.

The ring inside the gym I could tell had been around, it's tiny, the ropes are loose, the ring is cracked and duct taped. They have an uppercut bag, a 150lb bag, 100lb bag, and then a 70..All of em have some of the stuffing taken out, I can tell by the way they feel.

Seems like a good spot, one of the guys said it would be a little more live during the middle of the summer...Right now the only two guys that I saw that would be legitimate sparmates with me was some 35 -40 year old heavy guy who only appeared to be there for weight lifting and this 210lb mexican who was also new. all us new guys pretty much watched, I was the only new guy who brought hand wraps so I wrapped em up and when I saw a bag not bein hit for a few mins, borrowed some Lightweight's gloves and went to work....Loved the feel of these bags in there. Much better than the **** I have at home. Can't wait to go back tommarrow...

Good luck bro, I posted a vid that you were after me for (shadow boxing with footwork), in that old thread of mine.

Also, you went to a different gym right? Well that could be a blessing in disguise or it could be a curse... If you did go to a different gym to the one you phoned I suggest you check out the other one too. Its always nice to have options... imagine you go to the other one and you have 20 sparring partners etc etc.

Anyway good luck in your boxing. If you are dedicated you will become good no doubt.

                  Good luck.

Just remember, the most important thing about boxing is the sparring. Go in there with the best, and you'll improve. You don't get better by practicing on inferior opponents.
