  • James toney was not on the level of jones.. hopkins and calzaghe

good fighter, very good fighter toney but he was no great. to beat toney you need good speed and movement, toney looked his best against fighters who only fought up close against him and didn't mix it up.

all three of these fighters have good speed, footwork and can adapt! toney was only suited for counter punching off the ropes and never looked good coming forward.

i agree i think james toney is VASTLY
    overrated but the hopkins part.....no.....
hopkins couldn't adapt to fast fighters with great reflexes
and only looked good against 1 dimensional fighters
    that came straight at him

i agree with you too on the hopkins part but i still think hopkins adapted in a certain way to make those 4 fights close even if he lost.

toney got an asswhopping from jones who used lateral movement, footwork and handspeed.

Why lump poor Joe C. in that group?

Guess what Jones, Hopkins and Toney have in common that Calzaghe doesn't? They all beat a top five pound for pounder in their prime.

Seriously, Bernard Hopkins is NOT overrated, but James Toney definitely is.

Toney has been a very good fighter, but he's not a legend.

              Jones, Calzaghe, Hopkins > Toney.

No, toney had the ability to be a GREAT fighter and I think had more skill than either Jones or Calzaghe. The problem is, he was a classic underachiever.

Never worked hard and it affected his career.

how many fighters can beat Mike McCallum and Vassily Jirov, knock out Michael Nunn, and then gain 70lbs and be a force at heavyweight? some people seem to forget...Toney deserved the win in the first Sam Peter fight. And I think Peter was rated in the top 3 of the heavyweights at one point.
