I have love for great fighters in general, regardless of race, country of origin, religion, or ethnic background. Some of my faves right now include Pacman, Cotto, Israel Vasquez, Kelly Pavlik, Juan Manuel Marquez, Roy Jones, Casamayor, Floyd, David Haye, Soto, Guzman, B-Hop, Nate Campbell, Juan Lopez and Roy Jones. I find it particularly sickening when people get overly nationalistic and talk **** against an entire ethnicity, race, country, or even a whole continent, just because they feel compelled to have an ethnic rivalry. Some of the racist insults on BOTH Cotto and Margarito on Youtube AND this forum are simply ridiculous.
The worst level of this is when people who have NEVER laced up a pair of gloves to hit a heavy bag, let alone spar or compete, call warriors who put their lives on the line for our entertainment (especially CHAMPIONS like Margarito and Cotto) "*******," "bitches," etc. This is so preposterous that it makes me want to pull my hair out. I view this as possibly the worst sign of disrespect and a reflection on the lack of courage of the idiot projecting such unwarranted hatred...
I personally think Cotto will come out of this fight with the win, but certainly not because I don't like Mexican fighters. I just think that he is more versatile and has enough tools to win in what I expect to be a tough fight. That opinion does nothing to change the fact that I believe Margarito is a true warrior with a tough, gritty, relentless style that would make for a very tough fight for any elite welterweight.... That's called having an education opinion, which is just that - an OPINION that might prove to be right OR wrong in the end. Nevertheless, it is still respectful to both champions.
I see examples of the ignorant boxing fans who CANNOT leave race out of it all the time: it comes in all varieties: Filipinos hating on Mexicans, Mexicans talking reckless **** on Puerto Ricans, whites getting behind only "their own" caucassion "white hopes," african-americans insisting blacks are always better than the "white hypes", Americans talking smack on European "frauds," Mexicans talking smack on Filipinos, Puerto Ricans talking endless **** on Mexicans, Europeans biasedly promoting their fighters as the best, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc.... Of course, any intelligent fan of any race/nationality/ethnicity will not stoop to comments that belittle a whole people, yet these balanced, rational minds are usually the ones content to leave it alone, while its the idiots who continually blab their mouths or type away in the internet forums...
Let's all try to get over the overly-nationalistic pride thing and get real. In fact, if you feel compelled to root only for your country, race, whatever, that's fine by me, but in the end, at least try to be respectful in the way that you go about it. The contrary only reflects negatively upon your own intelligence....
