A combination of things, when he was leading man at 160, he didn't have many tough opponents to get through, it actually took a man who started at 147 to give Hopkins what was supposed to be his toughest fight. His other defining moment at 160 is another win over a man who started his career much lower down.
Hopkins has often lost to fighters with speed and/or a good boxing skillset, guys like Jones, Calzaghe (close), Dawson and Taylor (close). But after each and every setback, Hopkins has come back and his performance against Pascal in the rematch at age 46 was very impressive. How does he do it? He keeps clean, no alcohol, no partying, he stays in shape, never fluctuates in weight. The man is dedication personified.
Add to that a style which has gone from being somewhat attractive to being, dare I say it boring, in which he grapples more than he punches has added to his ability to stay at the top longer. Hopkins will never be a box office attraction but he does what he needs to, to win. Win ugly Bhop!
