After the men broke into the house, 27 year old Torrez claims he fought for his life. One of the intruders had at least one crude knife and another grabbed a kitchen knife. During the brawl, Torrez stabbed and killed one of the intruders, 25 year old Sal Garces. Another attacker, Nathan Avalos, was stabbed in the face and taken to a local hospital. The two other attackers, Leonard Calvillo and Raymond Garces, fled on foot but were later arrested.

Joseph's fiancé, his toddler, and three other women were all in the small home during the attack.

According to C.J. McElhinney, an attorney for Torrez, 22 year old Leonard Calvillo was the one who called earlier and made the threat. After the incident, he was charged aggravated burglary and aggravated battery. Raymond Garces, the 19 year old brother of the man killed in the incident, was also arrested on the same charges. Authorities stated that they will charge 20 year old Nathan Avalos after he is released from the hospital.

At first glance, it is obvious Torrez was defending his family, himself, and his home. No man should be expected to allow his family to be harmed by dangerous intruders. But authorities believe there was more to the story. According to local news, the body of the intruder killed was found in the street two houses down.

However, this still does not change the fact that Torrez was very likely fighting for his life. One of his attackers was on probation, another wearing an ankle monitor. It was clear he was fending off dangerous attackers. Did he take it too far? Maybe, but what is really too far when protecting your family. If he did not kill and fight for his life, there is no telling what would have happened to his own family ".
