I know a person who works for this magazine who also say Beats are overrated and really not that good. She recommended Seinhessers or whatever they are called. I forgot the model now.

Granted the website is pretty **** compared to the magazine. LOL.

I am not saying I am an expert by any means, he may well and probably does know more than me but I've owned enough high-end Hi-fi and listened to enough headphones to form an opinion on whats good or not.
My father was a sound engineer and built valve systems & amps for a living, my brother is a hi-fi dealer and worked for a shop that specialises in high-end audiophile equipment.
No its not me but I've seen/heard and owned enough equipment over the years.
I've had 4-5-6 and heard many more Sennheisers, all of which was rather poor and very harsh sounding. One pair the Hd650's great reviews etc, personally I felt they was no better than a pair of damn Skullcandy. You could of used the damn things as a head-harness to build your neck muscles they was that heavy & they sounded tinny on several set ups.

She is very likely being paid/persuaded to review them though I am not saying they don't make decent models or put their name on decent pairs.
Overall, Sennheiser is not for me & I feel they're totally overrated.

You know more than me so I can't argue with what was said, but I do know talip is into his stuff so would enjoy discussing (He is cool and doesn't argue)

I don't know the model of the headphones that she was talking about but it could be their best at a guess. I am not into music. The ones you recommended may be better, and perhaps she mentioned something of the same price range as the Beats.

My bro in law sells Beats, Bose etc... he gets anything from these guys who supply him what he wants. http://www.hiwayhifi.com/site/

His close friend is a sound engineer who worked with Keizer chiefs or whatever recently. I didn't get into it but he was telling me how if I made a song at home, it would sound **** on a PC, and the right people could make the same recording sound great. He did the same for live gigs or whatever but was pissed there are 150 tracks to deal with these days LOL.

if you think a properly set-up HD650 isnt any better than a pair of skullcandy, then good luck with that... i wish you all the best mate...

I'm a newbie to the audiophile realm with no intention of becoming one of them. Have you tried any of the cmoy amps? I recently soldered up my own w/parts from jdslabs.com & paired it w/senhd280pros (Reign in Blood kicks ass w/them!). Sounds just as good as the beats I've had a chance to use before . Probably my "untrained" ears, but this topic is way too subjective anyways.

For me, as a sound engineer i wouldn't use them for mixing and mastering because it gives you to much low end. But if you use them for casual use then yea they are good headphones. But they are overpriced because its like a fashion right now with them. I would rather get other headphones around 100 that dont look as cool but sound great.
the solo hd needs about 30 hours of playtime before they start sounding "good", ie break them in...i tried the solo hd in the store before i bought my studio and it sounded very muddy and unclear so i ended up buying the studios. last year i met this tourist who was rocking the solo hd and i was really surprised about how much better his sounded than the ones i tried in the store

as for the mixing and mastering part, i have two krk rp8 studio monitors which i use for mixing...however at night i sport my beats studio and when i end up mixing it down with the rp8s the next day i usually dont have to do a lot of tweaking...so they work for me in that department as well

I apologize beforehand for my lack of knowledge, but what actually occurs during this period before they start sounding "good" ? What makes the components better after a certain amount of break in period? Is there a way to measure it besides relying on your hearing?

                      not at all

the drivers in any pair of headphones are still "tight" once they leave the factory and after a while they tend to "loosen up" allowing the drivers to move more freely...this gives a more dynamic sound across the headphone's entire frequency range and thus the quality improves...some headphones like high end ATs or koss' are already broken in before u buy em

compare it to a new pair of sneakers, at first they feel tight and snug around ur feet but after a couple of days they feel like u've been wearing them forever

i'm sure there is a way to measure this but i'm not familiar with it...it's more of a rule of thumb when u're actively listening to or producing music
