  • Is this the reason why Mayweather is held to a higher PPV standard?

Considering Floyd is the American boy and Pac is the foreigner?

Shoot, Mayweather outselling him, but Pac at least hold the distinction of the best foreign PPV seller in America.

Well that does make sense. The ppv we measure is the ones sold in the U.S. an American fighter should sell more then a foreign fighter.

Yes, you do have to take into account that Pacquiao is a foreigner who grew up poor while Mayweather (although not rich) is a U.S. citizen had a world champion father of the same name to motivate him. Floyd had advantages that Manny didn't have just being born in the United States. It says a lot about Manny that he has been able to achieve what he's achieved.

But... given the hype that both of these guys get, I think Manny should still be pulling more than what he has been pulling.

Doing pretty good IMO... only other "foreigner" doing well is Cotto.
We don't even know for Canelo yet

Another thing that has to be taken into consideration is that half the Floyd PPV buyers buy because they hate him and want to see him lose. **** maybe more than half. Now granted that may be part of the genius of his strategy of accepting the role of villain, because it can double your money. Only if you're elite though...which he is.

Pac PPV buyers are mostly fans of his. He may have a large contingent of haters on this site and in hardcore boxing circles but the number of people who will buy a Manny PPV just because they want to see him lose are miniscule compared to the hoards of casual boxing fans who will buy Floyd's just so they can root against him.

That is why Manny KTFO shops were all over the internet for days and days. Many more neutrals seemed to celebrate Marquez finally getting his vengeance than were sad Pacquiao lost. You're severely underestimating how much overlap there is among PPV purchasers. People buy boxing PPVs because they want to be entertained or see something shocking, they don't just give HBO/Showtime $50-70 because they think a boxer is real nice guy.

You don't pay $70 twice a year to watch someone you dislike.

The haters play more of a promoter role, except they do it for free. They are constantly talking about him (just look at the number of Floyd threads on here VS the ones made by fans). I'm sure haters outnumber fans 2:1 in terms of threads created.

Whoever Floyd fights, in addition to beating them, he also takes their fanbase afterwards (Hatton, Oscar, Cotto, etc.). The same thing will happen to Manny when they fight. Pact*rds will hop on the bandwagon.

Here's the top 10 countries where Floyd is most popular in:

                    Puerto Rico 100
                    United States 93
                    Ghana 71
                    Panama 67
                    United Kingdom 64
                    South Africa 63
                    Ireland 55
                    Philippines 55
                    Canada 45
                    Mexico 45

                    And here's Manny Pacquiao's stats:
                    Philippines 100
                    Guam 61
                    Qatar 15
                    United Arab Emirates 15
                    Puerto Rico 12
                    Nicaragua 11
                    Singapore 10
                    United States 10
                    Mexico 9
                    Panama 9

Shouldn't China be up in that list for Manny since he JUST fought in Macau? Nope. Manny isn't even relevant, at all, in China. Those fans in Macau flew in from the Philippines.

Here's a chart showing Floyd's rising star power in China using the Baidu Index and his name in Chinese (弗洛伊德·梅威瑟)

The idea that a majority of the people buy Floyd's PPV to watch him lose is ridiculous.
