  • Storyboards of an 11-year-old martin scorsese

“As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a director”

Whether Martin Scorsese has ever paraphrased Henry Hill’s opening line from Goodfellas in such a way is unclear, and by unclear we of course mean unlikely, but one thing is for sure – the man was born to make great movies.

Stirring testimony of this can be found with these storyboards for a Roman film called The Eternal City starring Marlon Brando, Alec Guinness and Richard Burton. And if you’re wondering why you have never even heard of this doubtlessly epic swords-and-sandal romp, that's because it was all imagined by an 11-year-old Marty.

Yes, doused in strong colour, packed with great costume detail, lent inventive camera angles and bearing the words ‘directed and produced by Martin Scorsese’, these highly impressive doodles belie the scamp’s tender years.

Interestingly, those final credits are signed off with what looks like a stray trout - perhaps alluding to the 'sleep with the fishes' theme which would heavily influence future Scorsese films.

Either way, it certainly puts our own former classroom scribbling to shame.
