dundee kinda craped on durans lightweigt resume in his book witch is kinda funny since he moved up and beat leonard and palimino, and some other quality welters. Did carlos avoid certain lightweights and or was durans ?competion weak:

Duran has an exceptional Lightweight resume.

He beat the best, and great Lightweights.

I do, however, feel his LW resume is overrated to a degree.

For example, I can't see how anyone could say he has a better resume at LW than Benny Leonard. I just can't see it.

Duran's "resumé" can be summed-up with these 12 words: He was the greatest lightweight to ever lace-on a pair of gloves.

(With all due respect to Joe Gans and Benny Leonard)

        I agree.

I wrote a kind of essay on Duran's resume. I'll try and find it. My writing style may be a bit hard to follow as it's kind of literal and maybe not as interesting as I could have made it. I was simply trying to get the facts on paper and not forseeing other people could use it.

One of the best early opponents of Roberto Duran's career was the one he faced and defeated in his pro debut, Carlos Mendoza who would challenge for and fail to capture Wilfredo Gomez' Super Bantamweight title. After a few more fights at Super Bantamweight and Featherweight against journeymen of mostly the same nationality, the Panamanian Roberto Duran met his first real opponent 15 fights in. Ernesto Marcel at Super Featherweight. Marcel was 24-2 and was on a winning streak, Duran stopped this streak by stopping him in the tenth round. One fight later Marcel would win the Panamanian Featherweight title and after drawing in his first title challenge 8 fights later would win a World Featherweight Title strap defending 3 times, the final time against the great but, slightly green Alexis Arguello.

Duran then defeated (1 fight) former lineal Super Feathweight champion Hiroshi Kobayashi at Lightweight, Duran won the bout via KO7, a win which launched him to being ranked 6 by Ring Magazine.. After this fight he defeated 120-56 fight veteran Angel Garica. After winning this scrap he fought the man who had taken the crown from Laguna, the Scotsman and Hall of Famer Ken Buchanan. Buchanan was very much prime on a 10 fight winning streak which included a host of top 10 contenders and champions. For example, he had defeated former Super Lightweight Champion Carlos Hernandez, Ismael Laguna x2 and had defended his title twice.

Duran won this fight in controversial fashion. At the end of the 13 round after the bell had sounded Duran after the bell struck Buchanan low. Buchanan was in visible pain and couldn't continue as it was a hard shot right to the cojones. The ref ruled the bout as a TKO win for Duran to the dismay of Buchanan who had lost his title in this fashion. It must be pointed out however that Duran was clearly winning the fight at the time of the stoppage but Ken was certainly holding his own. If the low blow had not happened Duran would have simply won the Unanimous decision as Buchanan was too far down on points and didn't have the power to hurt Duran. After losing this bout Buchanan would beat Carlos Ortiz in the Puerto Ricans last fight and Jim Watt his fellow Scotsman, proving he was by no means past it.

After winning the title and having two meaningless non-title fights, Number 1 contender DeJesus fought Duran in a non-title bout and after flooring Duran in the first defeated him by points decision.

After this loss Duran made his first title defence against Jimmy Robertson who was the former NABF LW Champion and held wins over Navarro and a draw against HOF Sugar Ramos. However he was very inconsistent at the time of the Duran fight significantly lowering how good this defence was.

Duran's second defence was against JWW contender and Empire LW Champ Hector Thompson who was ranked 5ish(JWW) and later challenged for the title (losing.)

His next defence was against mid-rated LW contender Guts Ishimatsu, who only two fights later would win the WBC title and defend it 5 times before losing to Duran conqueror DeJesus. Duran once again defended well in an excellent win.

Duran's 4th defense came against his old rival DeJesus who was not ranked at LW due to moving up to JWW. However he had beaten the number 1 contender Ray Lampkin two times previously so was effectively the top dog in the division. In an action packed fight Duran was knocked down in the first again! However this time the fight was not a 10 rounder. Duran picked up the pace and battered DeJesus around the ring in the 11th - until he was unable to get up - to even the scores!

The 5th defense of the title came against a man who had earned his shot by beating mid rated contender Buzzzaw Yambe and a man who might possibly have the coolest birth name ever. MASATAKA(massattacker.) Takayama was the current Japanese LW title holder but that didn't matter as he didn't do any mass attacking and Duran KO'd him in one.

In the 6th match for Duran's beloved title he fought Ray Lampkin who had been number one for a while now as he owned the NABF title. However this statistic met the same fate as Lampkin as he was beat down and hospitalized.

Although not a title fight Duran defeated contender Edwin Viruet before defending against the mediocre Leoncio Ortiz. After this fight he travelled up to 140 and defeated Saoul Mamby.

Duran's next title defence was a decent one. Against the JWW undefeated contender Lou Bizzaro. Then 1 fight later Duran fought against 140 contender Emiliano Villa in a non-title bout. Despite never winning a title there Duran did do a bit work at 140. After winning this he fought Alvaro Rojas who despite having a terrible record got a shot at Guts' WBC title. After Guts beat him he got a shot at Durans title, and lost that one too.

He then hopped straight into another defence against number 4 ranked Fernandez who had just beaten Ray Lampkin the former number 1 contender and NABF title holder and Duran won that marking the 10th defence of his lineal title.

In his 11th title defence he beat former opponent Viruet who was now ranked number 3 in the LW ranks. Solid defence.

In Duran's last bout at Lightweight, he fought DeJesus a third time. Duran's WBA title was on the line, as was DeJesus' WBC title he had defended 3 times. This was a unification fight and a rubber match, lineal champion versus titleholder and number one contender. This fight had everything and Duran won it, marking the end of a splendid and very good Lightweight reign up there with the best.

          In summary:
Won (lineal) title from Ken Buchanan. (Lineal LW Title, HOF.)
Defended against Jimmy Robertson. (NABF LW Title.)
Defended against Hector Thompson. (Empire LW Title.)
Defended against Guts Ishimatsu. ( Future WBC LW Champ.)
Defended against Esteban DeJesus. (Future WBC LW Champ.)
Defended against MASSATTACKER Takayama (Japanese LW Champ.)
Defended against Ray Lampkin (NABF LW Title.)
Defended against Leoncio Ortiz. (Mexican LW title.)
          Defended against Lou Bizarro.
          Defended against Alvaro Rojas.
          Defended against Vilomar Fernandez
          Defended against Edwin Viruet.
Defended and won WBC title against Esteban DeJesus. (WBC LW Champ.)
          Vacated undisputed title.

Defended lineal title 12 times. Also unified.

          Key Wins.

          Ken Buchanan (Prime HOF.)
          Guts Ishimatsu (LW Champ.)
          Esteban DeJesus (LW Champ.)
Ray Lampkin, Vilomar Fernandez, Edwin Viruet Top 5 Contenders.
Hector Thompson (Top 5 JWW Contender.)
          Ernesto Marcel (FW Champ.)
          Hiroshi Kobayashi (SFW Champ.)

Overall good era, very good dominance, very good longlivety, good accomplishments.

Someone asked me to post the others.

Before fighting for the title Benny lost his first notable contest against Johnny Dundee and his second against Johnny Kilbane. However he came back with wins against good fighters Frankie Callahan, HOF Rocky Kansas(who was much more experienced during this fight with quality wins such as Ad Wolgast) and a draw against Hall of Famer Johnny Dundee who was also an experienced pugilist with wins over Willie Ritchie etc.

Leonard's first taste of battling for the title was in 1916 aged 20, when he fought the elusive Freddie Welsh the current titleholder and HOF. However this was a non-official bout and Leonard would only receive the title if he won by knockout. He did decision Welsh but, it wasn't enough to win the title

Around 4 months later, Leonard lost a newspaper decision to Welsh. After this bout Welsh would defend his title officially for the second time, winning a 15 points decision over Charley White. He also defended his title notably against Battling Nelson sandwiched between losing 6 times.

Leonard beat a mixture of good and great fighters such as Willie Ritchie and Frankie Callahan. Leonard then received a title shot from Welsh who was coming off 3 losses. Leonard won by technical knockout in 9 in the last noteworthy fight of Welsh' career. After winning the title aged 21 Leonard TKO'd Kilbane, former FW Champ (HOF) who was coming off a win over Freddie Welsh, when Welsh still had the title. In fact this fight was 4 weeks before Welsh lost the title to Leonard.

Now Leonard had won the title from a declining but, still great when motivated Welsh, he wasn't focussed on defending it too much for now. Only stopping Leo Johnson in 1 round. A fighter who despite having lots of wins was quite frankly a bum. Leonard made up for this however by twice unofficially decisioning the current Welterweight Champion(HOF) Jack Britton later a few fights later.

Instead of pursuing further title defences he drew with Ted Kid Lewis (HOF) for the WW title. Won newspaper decisions against Dundee the future FW, LWW champion and HOF. Defeated former LW champion Willie Ritchie by TKO8 who was by this time an experienced veteran who was a tough prospect as a former champion.

Around 2 years after winning the title he made his second defence against George Erne who had a losing record and must have only received a title shot by divine intervention coupled with a newspaper win over contender George KO Chaney.

As you would expect Leonard won this fight handily. Went on to NWS Dundee twice and won against gatekeeper Welterweight Soldier Bartfield.
Made a third defence against Jimmy Duffy who was an alright fighter I suppose but, nowhere near world class. However this fight was shadowed by contoversy as Duffy seemed to be unwilling to try. After this Benny defeated a host of reasonable fighters such as very good contender Charley White until defending against Joe Welling.

Welling had lost to Lew Tendler one fight before but had also recently beat Dundee and KO Chaney. Leonard won this bout by stoppage in the 14th.

Straight after this Leonard dived straight into another title defence against Ritchie Mitchell. Mitchell was on a nice little streak drawing against Dundee, beating good contenders like Bartfield and Joe Welling. His only loss coming before these once again being against Lew Tendler. Leonard stopped Mitchell abruptly ending his little roll.

Now is when the good stuff happens. Leonard won a Newspaper decison against Rocky Kansas. Kansas then scored an upset win over Tendler granting him a shot at Leonard's title which Leonard won by 15 round points decision. Once again defended his title against Kansas by stoppage. However Leonard could only lose his title in this match via stoppage in this bout as it was a No Decision. Kansas would become a lightweight Champion after Leonard retired.

After losing a WW title bid in controversial circumstances to his old nemisis Jack Britton, he then defended his title via 12 round NWS over the crafty Lew Tendler a Hall of Famer who is one of the greatest southpaws, and greatest fighters never able to win a title.

Went on to fight and beat in non title bouts a few good contenders such as Ever Hammer and Pinky Mithcell who were on unbeaten runs against some good fighters. He then solidified his dominance over Tendler in an official title bout which he won by 15 round points decision.

Leonard fought 3 more times before retiring. He then came back 7 years later winning against mediocre opposition before having his 20 or so win streak ended by future ATG Jimmy McLarlin.

Overall, not a bad reign. However something that greatly disappoints me is the fact Leonard routinely either weighed in over-weight or refused to weigh. Against Pinky Mithcell, Charley White for example. However he holds strong wins against champions and ATG's whether they be NWS or otherwise. Notable wins include in summary,

                - Freddie Welsh (LW Champ, HOF)
                - Rocky Kansas (LW Champ, HOF)
                - Johnny Dundee (FW,JWW Champ, HOF.)
                - Willie Ritchie (LW Champ, HOF)
                - Jack Britton (WW Champ HOF)
                - Lew Tendler (HOF)

                In summary -

                Won title vs Freddie Welsh.
                Defended against Leo Johnson.
Drew for WW title against Kid Lewis.
                Defended against George Erne.
Defended against Jimmy Duffy (Suspicious) at catchweight of 140.
                Defended against Joe Welling.
                Defended vs Rocky Kansas
Lost WW Title Challenge vs Jack Britton via contraversial DQ.
Defended against Lew Tendler via NWS12.
Defended via TKO8 in an NWS against Kansas (Could only lose title via stoppage)
Defended once again vs Lew Tendler officIal W15.
                Retired while holding title.

Defended title 6 times (8 counting NWS) in a stacked era. Also defeated numerous good contenders, HOF, former champions in non title bout. All in all excellent resume, great longelivity and dominance. Quite good accomplishments.

After winning the LWW title, Ortiz eventually lost the title to Duilio Loi and moved down in weight to try his hand at Lightweight.

After moving down to LW Ortiz was already ranked at #2 by the ring for his work in the JWW division (due to the fact JWW wasn't really an established division so they stuck him in with the LW). He proved he was worth something here by beating #5 contender Douglas Vaillant. He then beat the former challenger and former number 1 contender who was unsuccessful against current champion Joe Brown, Paolo Rosi.

Ortiz' defeat of Rosi earned himself a shot at Brown. Ortiz defeated Brown for the WBA Title in an excellent win.

For anyone who doesn't know much about Joe Brown. He was a classic boxer puncher and a Hall of Famer who had an excellent reign defending his lineal title 11 times.

Ortiz' first defence came against a Top 10 contender in Teruo Kosaka which he won by stoppage. He then went on to defeat top 10 contender Arthur Persley in a non title bout.

In his second defence against number 3 contender from Cuba Douglas Vaillant the vacant WBC title was also on the line. Ortiz won this bout in 13 rounds. Granting him both titles making him the Undisputed champion of the Lightweight class.

After a 2 non title bouts he was back fighting for the title against ATG Flash Elorde who was the current SFW Champ. Ortiz won this bout by stoppage.

Instead of participating in a non-title match Oritz defended the title again against Kenny Lane who was the number 1 contender and had fought in a losing effort to Joe Brown. Ortiz won but, this time only by decision. Contrary to when he had stopped Lane as JWW Champion.

Ortiz then faced Ismael Laguna and lost by MD to the Number 1 challenger. This left Ortiz without any belts. However Ortiz won a clear Unanimous decision in the return bout to regain his belts against the Hall of Famer. An interesting fact about these bouts is the first was referred by Jersey Joe Walcott and the second by Rocky Marciano! His next bout was a draw with Nicolino Locche who was the number 1 contender for the JWW belt and Ortiz weighed in at JWW.

He then defended against the Number 1 Super Feathweight contender Johnny Bizarro won via 12 round stoppage.

His next defence came against Hall of Famer Sugar Ramos, Who was Feathweight champion before being displaced by Salvadir. Ortiz won this bout by TKO in 5 and the WBC declared that an instant rematch take place because of the referee favouring Ortiz. And get this! As if Ortiz hadn't had enough famous referee's the one under scrutiny here was Billy Conn!

Ortiz defended his WBA title against Flash Elorde. The WBC refusing to have their belt up for grabs due to Ortiz not rematching Ramos. It had been 2 years since their first contest but, Elorde was still the SFW Champ! This bout ended the same way. Via stoppage in the 14th round. After this bout, Elorde would lose the Super Featherweight belts he had kept for so long.

Ortiz then won his rematch against Ramos using the same means one round earlier by TKO in 4.

His next challenge was the man who took his LW title from him previously and had worked his way to number 1 again after being knocked down to number 5 as a result of losing the title to Ortiz in the return.
Ortiz won the fight against the HOF, putting him 2-1 up in their series.

However, all great title runs must come to an end and Ortiz did via split decision at the hands of the number 1 contender Carlos "Teo" Cruz.

He would try to come back and got himself a match with my guy Mr Buchanan. But, at 36 was too old and his quickness had faded too much. Ortiz ended up surrendering on his stool to the disappointment of his cornermen, marking the end of a great career.

All in all a very good reign in the Lightweight stakes. Defeating good contenders and a handful of HOF on multiple occasions. Good accomplishments with 9 defences and being a 2 time Champion.

                  To summarise:

Won the title vs Old Bones Joe Brown (LW Champ and HOF.)
                  Defence vs Teruo Kosaka.
Defence of WBA title and won Vacant WBC Title vs Douglas Vaillant.
Defence of Titles v Flash Erolde (SFW Champ, HOF.)
Defence of Titles vs Kenny Lane.
Loses title to Ismael Laguna (LW Champ, HOF.)
Wins titles back against Ismael Laguna. (LW Champ, HOF.)
                  Defends against Johnny Bizarro.
Defends against Sugar Ramos. (FW Champ, HOF.)
Defends against v Flash Erolde (SFW Champ, HOF.)
Defends against Sugar Ramos. (FW Champ, HOF.)
Defends against Ismael Laguna (LW Champ, HOF.)
Loses to Carlos "Teo" Cruz. (LW Champ.)

9 defences of Undisputed LW Championship. (Forget the 2nd Elorde fight I'm still classing it as undisputed.)

                  Notable wins:
Joe Brown (Great LW Champ, HOF)
Flash Erolde X2 (Great SFW Champ, HOF.)
Sugar Ramos X2 (FW Champ, HOF)
Ismael Laguna x2 (LW CHamp, HOF)

How does Joe Gans resume compare with Ortiz' and Leonards?

Gans first major fight was one against 24 year old former Featherweight Champion of the world Young Griffo. Griffo has also been nominated into the boxing Hall of Fame. Griffo however had since moved up in weight and was now fighting at around 130Ibs. Despite only being 4 years younger than Griffo the experience difference was huge. Griffo despite being heavily experienced was by no means past it. Drawing with George Dixon and Kid Lavigne only a few fights beforehand. This however didn't stop Gans lasting the distance therefore battling to a draw. (It was the stipulation during the time that many fight could only be won by knockout.)

After facing many journeymen, and winning all but 2 of these bouts. Gans' next big challenge awaited. It was none other than his former ring partner Griffo. The Old Master as he would be known years later fought the "Australian Will O' the Wisp." to yet another draw. (This fight under the same stipulation as the last meeting.)

Gans' performances against Griffo had entitled him to a shot at the "Coloured Lightweight Title." However Gans lost this bout by 20 round points decision.

This didn't phase Gans as he went on an unbeaten streak that lasted a total of 26 fights. Included wins against good fighters including Kid McPartland who has challenged Lavigne for the LW title only the year before. Another fighter included in this streak was Wilmington Jack Daly, another fighter who had unsuccessfully challenged Lavigne for his title only 9 months previously.

The unbeaten run was ended up George Elbows McFadden. Who earned his name from both effective uses of the elbows and illegal uses of them too. This bout ended by stoppage and was Gans first knockout loss.

Again, Gans showed his grit by still fighting at a high level and winning. He went on another run which resulted him avenging his Coloured Lightweight Title defeat against Jack Dobbs. Drawing and beating his conqueror McFadden. He also drew with McPartland and Jack Daly in 6 round fights.

This streak of wins had made Gans stand out and the new title holder Frank Erne who had de-throned the HOF Kid Lavigne. Allowed Gans a title shot. Gans however was butted accidentally and asked for the fight to be terminated in the 12th round after his eye was reportedly separated from it's socket.

He then defeated a string of mediocre fighters the good contender Kid Parker and the HOF Young Griffo winning by TKO8 before fighting Terry McGovern in a horribly fixed fight which he lost by KO2. I'm not even going into the details of the McGovern fight unless someone actually wants me to as it's a whole different subject.

This is when the real meaty stuff begins. After losing to McGovern Gans beats former LW challenger Jack Daly again. He then dominated Dobbs again who had recently beaten a slightly green but, very good Young Peter Jackson.
After a few good wins against on form fighters he beat Dobbs twice again. Dominated old rival Elbows. After a few more comme si comme ca victories. He got another title shot against Erne. Erne who was also a former FW Champion and has a spot in the HOF. Was now starting to decline a little (He was by no means shot, just didn't do much after that. Whether that be nature's or Gans doing.) Gans capitalized on this and left nothing to the imagination. Beating the great Erne by knockout in one. Which marked the start of a new Lightweight era.

His first defence came against Elbows again. An average defence. One against an experienced rugged fighter so it was a good initial defence. Gans won this easily as you would expect. His next defence came against Rufe Turner who was a solid contender of the era, he was an alright fighter but, nowhere near the calibre. Gans wins by knockout. After a win against solid contender Jack Bennet in a non-title fight. Gans fought Kid McPartland for the title. He won that as well in case you hadn't already guessed. His next bout, albeit not for the title was against Dave Holly which he won. Although Holly was very very green(19-0 in official contests vs no-one.) he would go onto defeat men such as Langford in a huge upset and Joe Walcott.

His next fight was another defence against the 4 fight veteran(not a typo) Charley Siegler. Who had beaten Elbows McFadden a fighter who had challenged for the title just 4 months earlier which probably gained him his shot. Gans won again as you would expect. (Not gonna lie, Sieger's record is really really ****. However he might have deserved his title shot through the McFadden win alone, or another likelyhood he partook in many unrecorded fights.)

He then defended against Gus Gardner who was coming off 3 losses so who knows what he was doing in with Gans.

Another few non-title fights to keep busy to Gans to a man called Steve Crosby. He was another mediocre fighter who Gans had beaten previously. His next defence came against Buddy King who was another not especially noteworthy fighter but, these guys were the good stock of that era so Gans had no real other options to prove his greatness at this point.

Gans took on the invincible Joe Grim after this fight and decisioned him like every other person who faced Joe Grim in the "good" part of his career. Gans then lost to Jack Blackburn the trainer of Louis in a NWS bout then beat Dave Holly who was by this time more experienced and was coming straight off a win against Jack Blackburn.

The next day, Gans fought the arguable GOAT, Sam Langford. Seeing it was the next day Gans was pretty tired having to go from Philly to Mass. Gans lost this bout and Langford was declared the new Lightweight Champion! However the announcer realised that Langford had infact weighed over the Lightweight limit, resulting in the title being withdrawn. Sam Langford and Gans talked in a bar afterwards, with Gans teaching Sam a thing or two. Langford partly credits his greatness to the wise words Gans spoke to him there.

His next defence came against contender Willie Fitzgerald who was yet another "so-so" kind of fighter and former opponent of Gans.

After this he defeated Jack Blackburn via points decision. Undefeated solid contender Mike Ward. Drew with both Holly and Barbados Joe(most felt Gans won however there was no titles at stake. Walcott also shot himself in the hand after this bout.) His next fight was a title defence against Jimmy Britt who had beaten fighter such as Young Corbett II, Kid Lavigne and Frank Erne. Gans won this via DQ(later admitting it was fixed.) then went on to beat solid Rufe Turner again via NWS.

His next 3 notable yet non-title bouts were against the same opponent. Mike Twin Sullivan, a strong contender in the first fight which was ruled a draw. Enhanced his position for a rematch via beating solid fighter Jimmy Gardner. Before being KO'd by Gans in the rematch. Then being stopped once again in the immediate third fight which Sullivan weighed an astounding 148Ibs for contrary to the LW limit for the first bout.

After defeating Jack Blackburn once again he fought Dave Holly who by now had got his wins against Walcott and Langford before beating former title contender Rufe Turner. Gans won this bout also, and in his next defence won via DQ against the tough HOF BATTLING NELSON!!!!

In his next title bout versus Kid Herman (A fight there is footage of, you should check it out.) Who had drawn with the great Abe Atell and beat a host of solid contenders before this bout. Gans as you would expect won this fight, and by knockout. The next fight against Britt was not fixed, and Gans won this by stoppage against a Britt who one fight beforehand had beaten Battling Nelson via 20 rounds points decision.

The next man who attempted to de-throne Gans was George Memsic who was a solid fighter. He then defeated ****e Robson in a non title bout. Robson had beaten the great George Dixon more than once in the past.

The next battle for the belt came against Rudy Unholz who got his shot by beating Nelson and George Memsic previously. Gans stopped this man who really didn't belong there.

After this Gans contracted TB and was ill for his title fight return with Nelson and was stopped. He was also stopped in the return when he tried to regain his crown. Gans died less than two years later. A tragic end to a great fighter.

In summary: Very dominant, very consistent, good accomplishments. I think this was a weaker era he ruled in when compared to the likes of Benny Leonard or Carlos Ortiz. He fought good contenders and a good few HOF fighters. However I don't think his resume matches up with Leonards.
