What McAlister says is dead on, "don't load up". I'd say it's mostly between the ears, if you think "power shot" you're gonna tense up parts of your body that shouldn't.

I was in no way, shape or form a big puncher, just had a jab, but there was a heavy named Sgt. Knox on our team that had a killer straight right. He always told me it was all about velocity, mentally thinking of it as a bullet and not a sledge hammer. Speed, accuracy and execution was his point.

Good luck and talk to the best trainer you can about it.

Never ever throw every punch with same velocity... Your opponent will adjust... Change it up.. Some hard shots some pot shots and you will be good
You'll learn with more time that you can throw fast and hard at the same time........

Give your friend a $20 bill. Tell him to put the bill in his closed fist with 1/2 of the bill sticking out of the top of his fist. Tell him that if he can keep you from getting the bill, with just one try, from his fist that he gets to keep it . Get your proper distance from him and tell him to hold up the bill. Go........

I agree Rockin. OP imagine your arm is like a whip, no need to tense your arm whatsoever when throwing the punch, however just as your first reaches/touches the bag, squeeze/tense your first and retract it quickly, just like a whipping motion. You'll be able to have throw fast and hard.
The heavy bag is not for pitty patty punches, does **** all

He's not asking for advice to throw hard and fast at the same time... He's asking how to stop muscling his punches aka loading up

Changing velocity of the punches will help him not feel like he is muscling it... Everyone knows with speed comes power... So with someone like the original poster who with even the slightest movements still feels like he's muscling it.... Throwing fast like a whip isn't gonna help it will still come off as muscling it... When he relaxes and let the shots come with diff speeds... He will learn to lay off on some shots and that's when he will learn not to muscle every punch

Everything should be relaxed initially, but right before impact you clench and explode.
