According to Chris Eubank Sr., father and trainer of British middleweight champion Chris Eubank Jr. (22-1, 17 KOs), they never ducked a potential fight with WBA 'regular' middleweight champion Danny Jacobs.
Last year, Eubank Jr. was in line for a mandatory crack at Jacobs, but decided to go in another direction. Eubank Sr. says their goal is to fight the biggest name in the division, IBO/IBF/WBC/WBA middleweight world champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs), on a date in September in the UK.
Eubank's promoter, Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport, is in deep negotiations with Tom Loeffler, who promotes Golovkin, to stage the fight in the fall at a UK stadium venue.
Eubank still has business to take care of on Saturday night, when he faces undefeated Tom Doran (17-0, 7 KOs) at the O2 Arena in London. The fight will be part of the Anthony Joshua vs. Dominic Breazeale undercard.
"Some people are saying 'why are you ducking Jacobs?' We're not ducking Jacobs. We want the senior man, because we know that we can beat the senior man. There are different routes to the top. My route may seem peculiar to the viewers, but to me it makes clear, efficient, common sense. And remember, you guys don't manage Junior, I do. And all of you promoters who think I'm putting the cart before the horse, it's not your decision. I as his manager have the right to take him on whatever path that I think is not only safe, but efficient and the best," Eubank Sr. told BoxingScene.com.
Eubank Sr. says they could have face Jacobs or even had a rematch with WBO champion Billy Joe Saunders, but their main target is Golovkin.
He has the biggest name and he [is at the top] where Junior wants to position himself. I see it as a fight that he can win. We could have taken Jacobs, we could have taken Billy Joe Saunders. We're not worried about those fights," Eubank Sr. said.
