Goossen Blames Matchmaking for Chavez Jr Loss in April

Trainer Joe Goossen got only one crack at training former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., and the end result saw him quit on his stool on the night of April 18th at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. The sour ending produced a down pouring of beer from the rafters. Goossen, who was forced to train Chavez Jr. at a ski resort in Lake Tahoe and not his preferred setting of the Ten Goose Gym in Van Nuys, believes in looking back that facing tough light heavyweight contender Andrzej Fonfara was a mistake.

HBO Tops Showtime In Ratings Battle for 4/18 Shows

Between HBO and Showtime, boxing fans were treated to in-ring action on April 18 comprising of: the most watched fighter of 2014; a fight whose participants separately served in the past two Fight of the Year recipients; and the 2014 BWAA Fighter of the Year. Because the networks went head-to-head (a disturbing tradition that seems to occur around this time every year), the audiences were divided on the action, with HBO winning the network battle but plenty of fans tuning in overall.

WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson is laying down the gauntlet to WBA, IBF and WBO champion Sergey Kovalev to put all other considerations aside and to step up for a war to see who's the last man standing. At the presentation of the Emerald Belt in Mexico City, Adonis gave an insightful assessment of the victory of his former opponent Andrzej Fonfara, who stopped Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in the ninth round, this past Saturday night, to win the WBC International belt.

Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez is working hard in San Diego for his May 9th bout with James Kirkland in Texas. He took a break on Saturday to sit back and watch a big night of boxing - including the fight involving his countryman Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., who was dominated and stopped by Andrzej Fonfara in nine rounds. It was the second loss in Chavez's career. He was returning from a 13 month layoff and was fighting nearly two divisions above his best weight class. "That's the sport, it's something that's very serious. If you don't do things right, in the ring is when you pay. Hopefully he will recover soon and take boxing as it has to be, as a very serious sport," Canelo told ESPN Deportes. "I saw Chavez's fight against Fonfara. It was a fight that was dominated completely by Fonfara from the second round forward, when [Fonfara] started to connect very well."

By Francisco Salazar - StubHub Center, Carson, California - Andrzej Fonfara (27-3, 16KOs) showed former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (48-2-1, 32KOs) bit off more than he could chew by returning from a 13th month layoff to face a true light heavyweight - which is two divisions above Chavez's last true weight class. Fonfara dominated, dropped Chavez hard in the ninth and the Mexican star was unable to come out for the tenth. Chavez Jr. had a new trainer, a new outlook on life and was fighting on a different premium network. Unfortunately for him, it was not enough to translate into a victory. Chavez had enough after nine rounds, deciding to retire on his stool before an announced crowd of 8,636 at the Stubhub Center. From the opening round, Fonfara set the tone by beating Chavez to the punch - landing left hooks to the head and body. Fonfara mixed in right hands to the head, snapping Chavez's head back at times. "I knew Chavez was a good, tough fighter," said Fonfara immediately after the fight. "When he did hit me in the first round, I took the punches well. It was then that I knew I was going to win." Fonfara continued to mix in numerous combinations, landing more right hands to the head that developed a mouse under the left eye of Chavez. Undaunted, Chavez began to mount an attack in the fifth round. He tried to walk Fonfara down, which he had some success doing and landing his trademark left hook.

Mexican icon Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. is upset that his son, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., was stopped in nine rounds by Andrzej Fonfara on Saturday night at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. Chavez Sr. was never in favor of the contest, because Julio was inactive for 13 months and now moving up by two weight divisions to face a very solid light heavyweight contender in Fonfara, who came close to overtaking WBC champion Adonis Stevenson in the second half of their contest last year. Chavez Sr. still see a lot of potential for his son and wants him to forget a rematch with Fonfara at 170, instead moving down to the super middleweight limit of 168-pounds.

Fonfara (26-4, 15 KOs) landed big shots all night at the outdoor StubHub Center ring, and his left hand in the ninth knocked down Chavez (48-2) for the first time in his career. Chavez's corner stopped the fight after nine rounds, and the crowd threw beer while roaring its displeasure. The win was Fonfara's second straight since a competitive loss to light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson. The enigmatic Chavez hadn't fought since March 2013, when he convincingly won a rematch with Bryan Vera. He moved up by nearly two weight divisions for the match with Fonfara. Chavez had previously been a champion at middleweight.
