By Corey Erdman - In 2018, Errol Spence Jr. and Terence Crawford had a now infamous interaction in the hallways of the Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City following the Maurice Hooker-Alex Saucedo bout. The genesis of the meeting varies depending on the narrator. In a practical sense, both had been friends with and training partners
By Corey Erdman - While the boxing public was asking questions about what Gennadiy Golovkin had left, his upcoming opponent Ryota Murata was asking questions about himself. In his two years and four months out of the ring, a good portion of it dedicated to hoping then waiting for a bout with Golovkin, Murata had a lot of time to experience doubt.
By Corey Erdman - The story of Savannah Marshall and Claressa Shields has been framed in many different ways. A tale of a fighter, Shields, looking to avenge her last loss in any form of boxing from 2012. A tale of a fighter in Marshall seeking her just due, her opportunity to prove that she is the kryptonite to women’s boxing’s Superwoman. But a forgotten aspect of the long, testy feud between Marshall and Shields is that the last two times they could have fought in the amateurs, Marshall lost before they could meet in the tournament finals.
By Corey Erdman - For most human beings and many fighters, going through what Josh Warrington went through against Mauricio Lara in February of 2021 would be enough to change them psychologically forever. On that night, Warrington was shocked by an unheralded opponent, his jaw blasted by Lara’s unhinged attack so often that it physically cracked. Warrington got away from his steady, workmanlike approach, went for broke, and was met by a man better equipped for that kind of battle.
By Corey Erdman - For two months after his fight with Rashidi Ellis, Alexis Rocha says he would go for a run every day and think about what went wrong. As he would stride up and down the streets of Santa Ana, he would go round by round, dissecting scenarios in which minor changes would have resulted in a win rather than his first career loss. But sometime around the two month mark, he had an awakening. Worrying about how to beat Ellis wasn’t going to help him in the immediate future, for one, and also he concluded that the issues that caused him to lose were simply his own, rather than being outclassed by a superior opponent.
By Corey Erdman - Before Saturday night’s fight between Leigh Wood and Michael Conlan, trainer Ben Davison described Wood as “one of the best human beings (he’d) ever met.” Watching how Wood comported himself during a nuanced, emotional situation at the end of the fight, one can understand how he arrived at that conclusion.
By Corey Erdman - Roman Gonzalez’s earliest memories of fighting are from his childhood on the streets of Managua. Long before Alexis Arguello became his mentor and named him Chocolatito, before he became so iconic that he would be mononymous, he was the smallest kid in his friend group playing soccer. Particular spots in the neighborhood were of high value for kids looking to get a game of footy in, and with some regularity, Gonzalez and his friends had to physically fight off kids trying to take their spot.
By Corey Erdman - In February of 2020, the last time I would dine indoors for a year and a half, I sat in a café in Anaheim with a fighter that looked like he might be done. Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez was two fights removed from a brutal knockout loss at the hands of Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, a moment many took as an opportunity to eulogize the career of the former...
By Corey Erdman - Among Arslanbek Makhmudov’s many talents is his ability to look frightening. When considering why Makhmudov has the level of hype that he has at the moment, this ability is crucial. With angular eyebrows, a scruffy beard that concedes ground to a tire-thick neck and oversized chiseled bodily features, Makhmudov photographs like an action movie villain without the...
By Corey Erdman - If you were watching this past Saturday’s Matchroom Boxing offering on DAZN, you might have noticed something a little unusual. Although the crowd was engaged in the main event between Danny Jacobs and John Ryder, two top-level super middleweights, they were significantly more enthusiastic for the fight that directly preceded it.
