As BoxingScene.com previously reported, Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum is looking to stage a March bout between Nonito Donaire and undefeated World Boxing Organization (WBO) featherweight champion Oscar Valdez.

Donaire, 34-years-old, lost a twelve round unanimous decision - and his WBO 122-pound title - to Jessie Magdaleno last November at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“We are trying to arrange Donaire a featherweight championship fight against Oscar Valdez this March,” Arum said.

Donaire is pushing to get a rematch with Magdaleno. He feels the judges robbed him of a decision win and believes he will be more dominant in the rematch.

Arum told The Manila Times that Donaire (37-4, 24 KOs) can get that rematch - if he beats Valdez (21-0, 9 KOs).

“If he wins against Valdez, a possible rematch against Magdaleno might be next," Arum said. “That is the plan and there’s no immediate Donaire-Magdaleno rematch for the moment. This is really a big year for Top Rank boxers all around the world, a lot of activity and a lot of things that will happen in Australia, New Zealand England and France.”

Donaire's father and former trainer Nonong Donaire told the paper that his son was physically too small for the featherweight division. Donaire made a brief run at 126-pounds and captured the WBA world title, but he quickly made a decision to return to 122 after he was overpowered and knocked out by big puncher Nicholas Walters.

“I don’t like to say something regarding this matter but he is too small in that weight class, which is ruled by the big guys,” Donaire Sr. “His natural weight is at super bantamweight. At the same time, his talent is decreasing.”

“"Valdez is very strong and his body shots are powerful. I don’t want to say anything but that’s a tough opponent.”
