Abel Sanchez, trainer of IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (35-0, 32KOs), believes his fighter has dominated his division like no other fighter is boxing history.
Golovkin is blasting out his opponents, he is often rejected by top opponents, and now he is inching closer to a mega-fight in the middleweight division.
"Throughout the history of boxing, tell me who dominated a division in the way that Golovkin is dominating right now. Nobody, there is no one," Sanchez told ESPN Deportes.
There are ongoing discussions for a fall HBO Pay-Per-View fight between Golovkin and WBC middleweight champion Saul 'Canelo Alvarez (47-1-1, 33KOs). Golovkin is the mandatory challenger to Canelo's title.
If the two sides are unable to reach a deal, then a purse bid will take place on May 24th in Mexico City. If Canelo refuses to go forward, then he will be stripped and Golovkin will become the WBC champion.
The main goal for Golovkin is not a fight with Canelo, says Sanchez. The experienced coach once again makes it clear that Canelo's world title is their main goal.
"If [Golovkin's next fight] is not against Canelo, he could face [Daniel] Jacobs in the next fight. Although, it is also possible to make a fight against [Gilberto] 'Zurdo' Ramirez. The truth is, it's not easy to find opponents who are worthwhile," Sanchez said.
"We've never looked for Canelo. What we want is the WBC belt, because that would be the fourth title for Gennady. He wants to be a world champion who is recognized by four organizations. This fight was already ordered by the WBC and if he decides not to fight Golovkin, then that's okay because all we we want is the WBC middleweight title."
