New York, NY - It seems to be a tough process in nailing down legitimate opponents for the unheralded middleweight king, Gennady Golovkin (34-0, 31KOs).
Up next for Golovkin is little known, undefeated contender Dominic Wade. Tureano Johnson was set to be Golovkin’s mandatory and next opponent, but an injury changed the situation.
The fight is scheduled for April 23rd at The Forum in Los Angeles, California.
Enter Wade, an Al Haymon advised client being featured on network. The former President of the network, Ken Hershman, had basically cut the network's business ties with Haymon and his clients. That sent a mass exodus of Haymon advised clients to Showtime and now on various Premier Boxing Champions television platforms, a boxing series created by Haymon.
However, with Peter Nelson now at the helm of the network's sports programming, it seems that there is a new open door policy for Haymon clients. Nelson's position was essential for keeping Golovkin on track with his dream of becoming the undisputed middleweight champion of the world
Reaching a deal for this fight was easy, according to the managing director of K2, Tom Loeffler.
“If I was only open to dealing with a certain type of promoter or manager then we’d never get a fight done,” Loeffler told BoxingScene.com. “I have dealt with Al Haymon in the past and worked with Tom Brown of TGB. The fact of the matter is, it took us a week to get the deal done. But Gennady gives up a lot to get in the ring with guys. We overpaid Stevens for him to get in the ring. We had to go the pay-per-view route for Lemiuex in order to get him in the ring to get him what he wanted.”
So does that leave the door open for other Haymon middleweights like WBA 'regular' champion Danny Jacobs?
“How that transpires for a Jacobs fight down the road, we’ll just have to see. Wade was willing to get in the ring with Golovkin and get a deal done. We’ll just have to see moving forward.”
