The knockout streak of Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (35-0, 32KOs) will continue for a long time, according to his promoter Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions.
Golovkin has knocked out or stopped his last 22 opponents inside the distance. Only one fighter has been able to last to the eleventh round.
On September 10th, he will attempt to raise that number to 23 when he defends his WBA/WBC/IBF/IBO middleweight titles against Kell Brook (36-0, 25KOs) at the O2 Arena in London.
Brook, who holds the IBF welterweight championship, is a hugeunderdog in the contest. He moves up in weight by thirteen pounds. Brook is a big welterweight, and that fact was put on display last week when he outweighed Golovkin by eleven pounds at the WBC's 30-day weigh check. Brook was 176-pounds to Golovkin's 165.
To win this fight, even Brook admits that he needs to be "perfect." It's obvious that he won't stay in front of Golovkin - and he likely will use a lot of movement and the advantage of hand speed. Two of Brook's countrymen, Martin Murray and Matthew Macklin, have been knocked out by Golovkin. Murray stands as the sole fighter to last eleven rounds with GGG.
Loeffler is not worried about Brook's movement, strategy or physicality. He expects trainer Abel Sanchez to put together the proper plan - and for Golovkin to execute that plan to perfection.
"I don't think anybody today can cut off a ring better than Gennady Golovkin. It doesn't matter which style he's fighting. It doesn't matter if he's southpaw, right-handed, tall or short - Gennady figures out a way to cut off the ring to be able to deliver his punches. The last 22 opponents in a row have not been able to go the distance and I think with Abel's strategy that will continue for a long time," Loeffler said.
