Daniel Jacobs had a ringside seat for the latest ring appearance made by Peter Quillin, who will be his next opponent on December 5 in an all-Brooklyn showdown fittingly to be held at Barclays Center.
Quillin did his part to preserve the fight, which will air live on Showtime. The former middleweight champ scored a frightening 5th round knockout of Australia's Michael Zerafa in their NBC-televised catchweight bout Saturday afternoon at Foxwoods Casino in Mashantucket, Conn.
Jacobs was part of the broadcast team, though also an interested observer. The reigning middleweight titlist tried to downplay the performance of his future in-ring rival.
"Against a guy who came from Australia who we never knew, I'll say B+," noted Jacobs, attempting to throw shade at the mismatch, but perhaps forgetting his own vacant title win versus overmatched Ausss boxer Jarrod Fletcher last summer.
Still, no matter how well Quillin fared on Saturday, a completely different style is coming at him later this year.
"When you're messing around with a guy like myself it's something different," insists Jacobs, who is coming off a bizarre 2nd round knockout of Sergio Mora this past August. The win marked his second title defense, having also stopped Caleb Truax in the 12th and final round of their Chicago clash in April.
Jacobs and Quillin have crossed paths plenty of times in their respective careers, even having fought on the same Oct. '12 show that marked boxing's debut at the then-newly erected Barclays Center.
Despite their geographical bond, Jacobs elected to not get too close to Quillin, given they are both regarded among the best middleweights in the world.
It was a wise move, as both get to carry a chip on their shoulder ahead of fight night, rather than showing concern over punching a friend in the face.
"In the sport of boxing, you can't make too many friends because you might wind up fighting them," Jacobs noted, before speaking on the significance of the upcoming fight. "It will be one of the biggest fights Brooklyn has had in a very long time."
