Anselmo Moreno: record, next fight and profile →
The long-reigning titlist delivered perhaps the biggest win of his career, stopping Anselmo Moreno in the 7th round of their wild rematch Friday evening in Osaka, Japan. Five knockdowns came of the night, with both boxers down early before Yamanaka floored Moreno twice in round seven in forcing the stoppage win.
by Cliff Rold - Sometimes once is not enough. Almost exactly one year ago, two of the best bantamweights of their generation, and the last two standing from what was a stellar run for the class a few years back, locked horns for the first time. Japan’s Shinsuke Yamanaka retained his WBC title with a closely contested split decision over Panama’s Anselmo Moreno.
The undefeated WBC bantamweight champion, Shinsuke Yamanaka, will be defending his crown in a rematch bout with Panamanian Anselmo 'Chemito' Moreno. While Hugo Ruiz will be defending his super bantamweight crown for the first time, against former world champion Hozumi Hasegawa.
WBC bantamweight champion Shinsuke Yamanaka will take on Anselmo Moreno in a rematch, while former double champion Hozumi Hasegawa will attempt to recapture a world title against Hugo Ruiz in a WBC super bantamweight bout on September 16, at Edion Arena Osaka, the organizers announced on Wednesday.
With the pride of having made 13 defenses as a world champion before being dethroned, Anselmo 'Chemito' Moreno said his priority is to regain a world title in the bantamweight division.
Anselmo Moreno is officially back in the title picture. The former longtime bantamweight titlist never really went anywhere, but is now guaranteed an opportunity to become a two-time champ after thoroughly outboxing Suriyan Sor Rungvisai over 12 rounds Saturday evening in Panama City, Panama. Scores of 117-110 (twice) and 116-112 rang in favor of Moreno, who is now in line for a rematch with unbeaten bantamweight champ Shinsuke Yamanaka.
A battle of former world champions is set. Anselmo 'Chemito' Moreno of Panama will have the opportunity to get himself another world title shot, when he faces tough contender Suriyan Sor Rungvisai of Thailand in a WBC final eliminator on the 30th of April at the Arena Roberto Duran in Panama.
There could be some trouble brewing between two of the best fighters in Panama. Luis 'El Nica "Concepcion (33-4, 24KOs) spoke loud and clear regarding the attitude of his colleague Anselmo "Chemito" Moreno (35-4-1, 12KOs). Concepcion says the things that are happening to Moreno are due to his own actions and the actions of his wife/manager Laguna Moreno.
Light Heavyweight: World Champion Adonis Stevenson retained again and it become more glaring by the fight just how bad it is not to have a showdown between he and Sergey Kovalev. They’ve eliminated the pretenders. Welcome to limbo. Super Middleweight: Badou Jack and George Groves both hold their spots after an entertaining title tilt. Badou Jack is having one of the best years in boxing.
In the span of a few days, we had an undisputable career saving effort in one division and a disputed outcome in another in a clash of two of that division’s best in recent years. Altogether, good boxing all around. In Mexico last Saturday, former Flyweight titlist Luis Concepcion was staring into the career abyss. He showed more discipline than his norm, at least early, and laid a beating on streaking David Sanchez at 115 lbs. He may not topple top talents in the class; titlist Carlos Cuadras already has his way with Concepcion earlier this year.
