Light Heavyweight: World Champion Adonis Stevenson retained again and it become more glaring by the fight just how bad it is not to have a showdown between he and Sergey Kovalev. They’ve eliminated the pretenders. Welcome to limbo.
Super Middleweight: Badou Jack and George Groves both hold their spots after an entertaining title tilt. Badou Jack is having one of the best years in boxing.
Middleweight: Martin Murray is now campaigning at Super Middleweight and exits the top ten. Chris Eubank Jr. enters the top ten.
Jr. Middleweight/Welterweight: There is plenty of reason to think Floyd Mayweather isn’t seriously retired. However, given his announcement that he is retired, repeated multiple times, he is taken at his word. The World Championships at 154 and 147 are left vacant in his absence. Jermall Charlo enters the top ten at 154 off his belt winning effort over Cornelius Bundrage. Marcos Maidana exits the top ten at 147 and Brandon Rios enters the rankings.
Lightweight: Previous #1 Richar Abril exits for inactivity with no fight scheduled. Diego Magdaleno enters the ratings with a title shot looming.
Jr. Lightweight: It might have been the fight of the year, but Roman Martinez didn’t deserve the draw he got. He slips in the ratings and sits side by side with the man he will likely see a third time in a row: Orlando Salido. That’s good for everyone who tunes in.
Featherweight: Leo Santa Cruz enters the ratings with a big win over Abner Mares. Jhonny Gonzalez exits the top ten after a second straight loss, albeit in the Jr. Lightweight division.
Jr. Featherweight: Santa Cruz and Chris Avalos, after a loss at Featherweight, exit the top ten. Andres Gutierrez also exits having not competed in the division since August 2014. New to the top ten are Julio Ceja, who should soon be elevated to full WBC beltholder. Also entering are undefeated Moises Flores and Genesis Servania.
Bantamweight: Rumors of the decline of Anselmo Moreno were overstated. He appeared to these eyes, and much of the press, to do enough to defeat division head Shinsuke Yamanaka. Two of three official judges disagreed and the fight had enough close rounds to respect the decision, leaving the top four in the division as was. A rematch is in order. Will the WBA order a showdown between co-titlists Jamie McDonnell and Juan Carlos Payano? They should. Julio Ceja exits to compete at 122 lbs. Malcolm Tunacao exits for inactivity and we wish a speedy recovery after a recent assault. Zhanat Zhakiyanov returns to the top ten and is joined by Rau’shee Warren who lost a close one to Payano in August.
Jr. Bantamweight: Luis Concepcion crashes the top ten with a career saving thrashing of David Sanchez. This win, coupled with Carlos Cuadras’s one-sided win over Concepcion earlier this year, moves Cuadras up a slot. Sanchez falls in the ratings, pushing out Felipe Orucuta. After reconsideration of recent form, Norberto Jimenez also enters to push out recently defeated Arthur Villanueva. Jimenez was highly unlucky in a title challenge of Kohei Kono last year and has won twice since.
Flyweight: Giovani Segura, previously rated ninth, exits for a year’s inactivity with no fights scheduled. Former Jr. Flyweight titlist Johnriel Casimero returns to the top ten and appears headed towards a fight with McWilliams Arroyo. Casimero lost a controversially officiated title fight with Amnat Ruenroeng earlier this year.
Jr. Flyweight: Raul Garcia, who hasn’t fought in the division in well over a year, exits the top ten. He was previously fourth. Randy Petalcorin enters the top ten.
Strawweight: Mario Rodriguez lost his second straight in August and exits. This loss was overlooked in error in the previous update. Ryuji Hara enters the top ten.
