Former world champions Alberto “El Explosivo” Machado and Ángel “Tito” Acosta are pondering the next step in their respective careers. While Acosta could begin his 112-pound campaign as early as the end of October, Machado would do the same in the lightweight division (135 pounds) in November.
Former world champion Alberto “El Explosivo” Machado will officially leave behind the super featherweight division with a view to campaigning at 135 pounds early next year. Machado made the decision after falling by knockout at the hands of California's Andrew Cancio this past June. The Puerto Rican tried unsuccessfully to recover the belt of the World Boxing Association (WBA). Marchado had been knocked out in the first bout as well.

Whatever happens Friday night, Freddie Roach at least is satisfied with how Alberto Machado prepared for his immediate rematch against Andrew Cancio. Roach can’t say the same thing about their fight February 9, in which Cancio scored a huge upset. Machado spent just four weeks training for that fight at Roach’s Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood, California.
Alberto Machado wasn’t ready to hit the panic button in the wake of his first career defeat. His title reign-ending knockout loss to Andrew Cancio this past February still ranks among the biggest upsets of a year loaded with surprises. The only thing that will surprise Puerto Rico’s Machado is if this same thing occurs in their rematch this weekend.
