By Keith Idec - Badou Jack took five-plus rounds to get going Saturday night. Once the cautious challenger finally warmed up, survived the dangerous Adonis Stevenson’s early attack and let his hands go, Jack took the fight to the defending champion and had a lot of success throughout the second half of their 12-round...
Stevenson, Jack Scorecard BoxingScene Live - TORONTO, Ontario – Adonis Stevenson and Badou Jack both predicted they would win the WBC Light Heavyweight World Championship by knockout as they were joined by all-time great Floyd Mayweather during the final press conference on Thursday.
WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson landed 55.3% of his power punches- #1 among CompuBox Categorical Leaders. 35.4% of Stevenson's landed punches are body shots-(CompuBox avg.: 23.3%). Stevenson's opponents landed a note-worthy 34.4% of their power shots, but only 6.7 per round. Jack landed 46% of his power punches- nearly 10% higher than weight class average.
Badou Jack quickly reminded Adonis Stevenson as the champion bragged about his power that Stevenson hasn’t fought anyone as good as Jack during his championship reign. Jack clarified, too, that it was he who wanted to fight Stevenson, not vice versa. The challenger doesn’t think this intriguing light heavyweight title fight would’ve been scheduled had he not pushed for it.
An old-timer cliche, paraphrased from various forms, goes like this: a fighter doesn’t really learn their craft until they lose. In this era of more tightly managed careers, losses aren’t often seen as the same sort of necessary building block. Fighters don’t fight enough to be able to afford them. That doesn’t mean they don’t have their value.
Adonis Stevenson isn’t the least bit concerned about the long layoff he’ll end Saturday night. The WBC light heavyweight champion hasn’t fought in nearly a year, not since pummeling Poland’s Andrzej Fonfara in their rematch June 3 at Bell Centre in Montreal. He also has turned 40 since stopping Fonfara in the second round.
NEW YORK – Surrounded by reporters, Eleider Alvarez attempted to clear up a misconception. The Colombian contender clarified that he did not take any step-aside money to delay his WBC-mandated shot at light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson. Not even once, much less multiple times.
NEW YORK – Yvon Michel couldn’t quite believe what he was reading. As Adonis Stevenson’s promoter perused a poll of reporters’ predictions on the Stevenson-Badou Jack fight, he had to make sure his eyes weren’t deceiving him. Re-reading it confirmed that nine media members picked Jack to beat Stevenson and only two predicted Stevenson would win Saturday night in Toronto.
