Adonis Stevenson: record, next fight and profile →
World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman has indicated that WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson must face mandatory challenger Oleksandr Gvozdyk, who holds the WBC's interim-title, in the coming months.
The Adonis Stevenson-Badou Jack fight drew a peak audience of 611,000 viewers on Saturday night for Showtime. According to ratings released Tuesday by Nielsen Media Research, the main event of a “Showtime Championship Boxing” doubleheader averaged 535,000 viewers. The Quebec-based Stevenson (29-1-1, 24 KOs) and Sweden’s Jack (22-1-3, 13 KOs) battled to a 12-round majority draw, which enabled the 40-year-old Stevenson to retain his WBC light heavyweight title at Air Canada Centre in Toronto.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. wasn’t the least bit surprised Adonis Stevenson became noticeably tired during the second half of his light heavyweight fight against Badou Jack. “I told you,” Mayweather said during the post-fight press conference following their majority draw Saturday night in Toronto.
By Lyle Fitzsimmons - Virgil Hill knows a good light heavyweight when he sees one. After all, the Missouri native-turned-North Dakotan was among the world’s best 175-pound fighters for more than a decade across the 1980s and ’90s, while laying the foundation for an International Boxing Hall of Fame inductio...
In the wake of the twelve round majority draw between WBC light heavyweight titlist Adonis Stevenson and former two-division beltholder Badou Jack from this past weekend in Toronto, both sides have talked of a possible rematch.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS - 5/19 SHOWTIME - ADONIS STEVENSON D 12 BADOU JACK -- GARY RUSSELL W 12 JO JO DIAZ - WBC Light Heavyweight world champion Adonis Stevenson and former two-division world champion Badou Jack fought to a highly competitive majority draw Saturday at Air Canada Centre in Toronto. At MGM National Harbor in Maryland, and in the opening bout on SHOWTIME, Gary Russell Jr. (29-1, 17 KOs) defeated Joseph "JoJo" Diaz Jr. (26-1, 14 KOs).
Adonis Stevenson and Badou Jack: Neither boxer exited the ring with any degree of satisfaction after fighting to a majority draw Saturday at Air Canada Centre in Toronto. They both scored points in the public eye, though. Many fans had lost interest – and possibly faith – in Stevenson because he had managed to avoid compelling fights the past several years even though he is the WBC light heavyweight titleholder. It was reasonable to ask: Can the hard-punching Haitian-Canadian still fight at the highest level at 40?
Badou Jack sensed an exhausted Adonis Stevenson was about to go down toward the end of their fight Saturday night. Jack claimed during their post-fight press conference that if he had “maybe five, 10 seconds more,” the defending WBC light heavyweight champion would’ve hit the canvas. Had that happened, Jack would’ve received the one-point advantage he needed on two scorecards to win a unanimous decision and take Stevenson’s title.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. suspects two judges were swayed Saturday night by what Adonis Stevenson accomplished in short spurts. The retired superstar, whose company promotes Badou Jack, believes his fighter did more than enough to out-point Stevenson and win the WBC light heavyweight title from him. That didn’t happen, according to Mayweather, because judges Guido Cavalleri and Eric Marlinski didn’t give Jack enough credit for what he accomplished during some rounds in which Stevenson had brief success.
By Corey Erdman - For many years, Toronto was one of the only major cities in North America that wasn’t a thriving market for boxing. Typically, big cities are thriving markets for just about everything, but for a variety of reasons, that wasn’t the case when it came to boxing in Toronto. On Saturday night, Toronto’s A...
