(TOLEDO, OHIO) – Day three of the 2012 National PAL Championships showcased the longest night of action in the tournament with 63 bouts taking place at the Seagate Centre in Toledo, Ohio. In the first national event following the Olympic Games, several potential stars have emerged while the veterans are looking to stake their claim on their respective weight divisions.

After several great bouts in the younger age groups, the male and female boxers in the open division took center stage. 2012 Olympic Trials champion Eros Correa (San Jose, Calif.) moved up a weight class to the flyweight division for the 2012 National PAL Championships and he won a 17-12 decision over the U.S. Army’s Charles Williams (Fort Carson, Colo.) to earn a spot in Thursday’s action. Correa will take on a second straight opponent named Williams in the quarterfinals, battling Christian Williams (Chicago, Ill.) in his next bout.

U.S. Olympic Team Trials flyweight competitor Virginia Fuchs (Kemah, Texas) moved up to the featherweight division for the 2012 National PAL Championships and she’s enjoyed success in her new weight division. Fuchs won a high scoring affair with Liz Leddy (Portland, Maine) in Wednesday’s action, taking a 44-22 decision to move on to the featherweight finale. Fuchs will have a large task in Saturday’s final, taking on reigning World Champion Tiara Brown (Lehigh Acres, Fla.) in the championship bout. Brown enjoyed her second convincing victory of the tournament on Wednesday, winning a 32-12 decision over Jen Hamann (Seattle, Wash.).

Defending champion and hometown boxer Albert Bell (Toledo, Ohio) pulled out a close decision over Luis Cortes in his second bout of the event, taking a 6-5 decision to move on to a quarterfinal bout with fellow Ohio native, Mikail Jones (Cincinnati, Ohio).

The upset of the night came in the women’s lightweight division as 17-year-old Rashida Ellis (Lynn, Mass.) defeated World Championships bronze medalist Mikaela Mayer (Los Angeles, Calif.) in their lightweight match-up. Ellis took a strong early lead and Mayer couldn’t recover from her deficit and the teenager went on to win a 28-19 decision and a berth in Saturday’s finals with Olympic Trials participant N’yteeyah Sherman (Barberton, Ohio).

2012 Junior Olympic National Champion Erickson Lubin (Orlando, Fla.) has enjoyed a smooth transition to the open division at the National PAL Championships. He put on an impressive show in Wednesday’s action, stopping Delorien Caraway (St. Paul, Minn.) in the third round of their light welterweight match-up. He will face Gary Martin (Philadelphia, Pa.) in quarterfinal round action on Thursday.

Wednesday was a good night for the Ellis family with both Rashida and her brother Rashidi Ellis (Lynn, Mass.) claiming big victories. Rashidi Ellis stopped Trumaine Charles (Chicago, Ill.) in the second round of their welterweight showdown, advancing Ellis on to the quarterfinal round. Ellis will face former Junior Olympic star Zeddie Adams (Cleveland, Ohio) on Thursday.

Leshawn Rodriguez (Shirley, N.M.) earned a spot in the middleweight division quarterfinals with a 23-10 win over Robert Sweeney (Hampton, Va.).

One of the crowd pleasers of the night took place in the light heavyweight division as 2012 USA Boxing National Championships bronze medalist Anthony Sims, Jr. (Plainfield, Ind.) faced off with hometown boxer Leo Hall (Toledo, Ohio). Heavy shots were flying throughout the bout and both boxers had a point taken by the referee in the second round. Sims held a one-point lead as the final round began and built on his lead over the final three minutes. He went on to win a 20-16 decision over Hall to move on to quarterfinal action. Sims moves on to a quarterfinal match-up with former Under 19 National Champion D’Mitrius Ballard (Temple Hills, Md.) on Thursday.

Another Under 19 National Champion took the ring in heavyweight action and he took care of business quickly in preliminary round action. Joshua Temple (St. Louis, Mo.) stopped Alvin Varmall, Jr. (LA Place, La.) in the first round of their heavyweight bout to advance on to the quarterfinals. He will face Alberto Fundora (Tampa, Fla.) on Thursday.

2012 Olympic Training Partner Stephan Shaw (St. Louis, Mo.) competed in his first bout of the tournament on Wednesday, challenging Kent Brinson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) in super heavyweight competition. Shaw’s win moves on him on to championship round action with Charles Martin (Carson, Calif.).

Fifty-eight bouts will be contested on Thursday with the men’s open division moving into quarterfinal round competition and the junior contestants boxing in semifinal action.
