Birmingham welterweight Frankie Gavin has been handed a suspended jail sentence after admitting his role in a family holiday bar attack.

The 30-year-old southpaw was given a five-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, after he threw a broken bottle at a man, broke a bar stool on another man’s head and punched a doorman as violence erupted at the Krackers Bar in Brean, Somerset.

The incident - which took place just days after Gavin’s defeat at the hands of Kell Brook in their IBF world title fight at London’s O2 Arena - was witnessed by Gavin’s two young children.

Emma Lenanton, prosecuting, said, according to the Daily Mirror: "The bar was full of members of the public including children who witnessed the violence.

"Six people were injured, including a pensioner who got caught up in the violence, and injuries they received included cuts and bruises. It was sustained violence."

The court heard Gavin - nicknamed ‘Funtime Frankie’ - was out with his wife, two children and two other male friends and their families when the attack took place on June 7.

The three friends had been drinking when an argument broke out with staff at the bar.

Gavin did not initially get involved when violence broke out involving his friend Andrew Reilly, 31, who pleaded guilty to affray, but broke a bottle on a table and threw it a man who had been attacked and was on the floor.

CCTV showed Gavin hitting another man over the head with a bar stool and he then punched a doorman when he returned to the bar to get car keys he had left behind.

According to the Daily Mirror, Sam Roake, defending Gavin, said: "This was totally out of character. Mr Gavin is very much a role model in boxing.

"He does a lot of charity work. He realizes that if he goes to prison his career will be over. He will lose his license. He is begging the court to be merciful. This will never happen again.

"He is a family man, married to Emma, and has two young children. They witnessed what happened and he is full of shame at his actions."

The former British champion appeared at Taunton Magistrates Court to face a charge of affray.

Sentencing Gavin, District Judge David Taylor, said, according to the Daily Mirror: "I have read your references, including one from promoter Eddie Hearn, who calls you a role model.

"Well, you are a role model - for gratuitous violence in the full view of children. But in your favor I have watched CCTV footage and you were not the prime aggressor."

On top of his suspended sentence, Gavin must complete 180 hours of unpaid community work and pay costs of £1,800. He must also pay the six victims £75 each.
