As previously reported a few days ago on BoxingScene.com, featherweight contender Jayson Velez (22-0-1, 16 KO) from Puerto Rico has started training at Wild Card Gym in Hollywood, with Hall of Fame coach Freddie Roach. Jayson previously worked with Abel Sanchez, who trains middleweight king Gennady Golovkin among others.

Roach's stable includes Manny Pacquiao, Miguel Cotto, Zou Shiming, Ruslan Provodnikov and several others. Velez confirmed BoxingScene's story to El Vocero, stating that he ended his run with Sanchez on a positive note.

Velez is coming back from a controversial draw with IBF champion Evgeny Gradovich from November 29th. He could be fighting Philippine Marvin Sonsona (19-1-1, 15 KO) in a WBC mandated final eliminator. In his last fight, Sonsona defeated Wilfredo Vázquez Jr. by split decision on June 7 last year.

“I have been training with Freddie since February 1st. We make a good team and working with a trainer who's a member of the Hall of Fame makes all the difference," Velez said.
