Kevin Cunningham, the manager and trainer of IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander (24-1, 13KOs), issued a response to some of the some recent headlines that appeared on BoxingScene.com.

Since Tuesday, Alexander has been thrown into the spotlight after Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26KOs) wrote the following message on his personal Twitter page.

"The negotiations for my fight are almost done," wrote Mayweather. "The front runner is IBF Champion Devon Alexander. It'd be a unification bout at welterweight."

Since making that tweet, the IBF made it known that a Mayweather-Alexander fight would not be approved - because Alexander has to face mandatory challenger Kell Brook. The match with Brook has been postponed twice, with Alexander withdrawing on Monday with a right bicep injury. The match was scheduled to take place on February 23rd in Detroit. Mayweather returns on May 4th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Earlier today, Golden Boy Promotions Richard Schaefer, who promotes Alexander and works with Mayweather - told BoxingScene's Robert Morales that he was unaware of any negotiations to make a Mayweather-Alexander match - and he was working with Brook's promoter, Eddie Hearn, to reschedule the mandatory fight with Alexander.

"I have absolutely no awareness of any negotiations taking place with a fighter who is under a promotional contact with us. And Al Haymon, who is the advisor for Devon Alexander and Floyd Mayweather as well, has not confided to me either that there would be any negotiations going on unbeknownst to me," Schaefer said.

However, Cunningham says Mayweather must keep his word.

"Floyd says he's a man of his word and he calls his own shots. If that's the case, Mayweather-Alexander gets made," Cunningham told BoxingScene.com.

Cunningham would not elaborate any further on the true meaning behind his comment - and Mayweather's adviser, Leonard Ellerbe, was unavailable for comment.

Most insiders believe that Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero is still the actual opponent who will secure the May date with Mayweather.
