WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns has promised to do everthing he can ahead of his unification showdown with Miguel Vazquez.

The Scotsman faces IBF title-holder Vazquez at Wembley Arena on March 16.

And the 29-year-old from Coatbridge is relishing his dream fight against the Mexican and says he’ll be in the best shape ever for the biggest test of his 37-fight career.

Burns said: “Vazquez is a top world champion and easily the best I’ve faced in my career.

"When the fight was put to me, I said straightaway ‘Lets do it’, this is what I’m in this sport for, to face the best and prove that I’m the best out there.

“I only watch my opponent once on video and that’s the last time I watch him, but from what I’ve seen of Vazquez he’s got great all-round skills, good technique and is an excellent counter-puncher.

“I’ll be in great shape for the fight. I’ll be sparring with plenty of tall, rangy, welterweights to prepare, but it’s what I do on the night that will count and I always rise to the occasion for a big challenge.”

A win for Burns could mean a further unification contest against WBC champ Adrien Broner.

“I laughed when people said I was running from Adrien Broner," added Burns.

"I don’t run from anybody. I’ve got to make sure I beat Vazquez first then I can go into a fight with Broner with two world title belts to his one.

“Of course the pressure will be building up closer to the time, but I’ll do what I have done for every title fight and just go out and do my job.”

Burns v Vazquez joint-headlines a massive fight card along with Nathan Cleverly’s WBO light-heavyweight title defence against Robin Krasniqi.
