According to multiple sources in Mexico, former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Junior (46-1-1, 32 KOs) intends to terminate his relationship with trainer Freddie Roach. There has been no confirmation from Chavez himself, but sources indicate that Ignacio "Nacho" Beristain and Robert Garcia are being mentioned as the leading candidates to replace Roach.

Chavez suffered his first defeat in September, when he lost a twelve round decision to Sergio Martinez in Las Vegas. Following the match he tested positive for marijuana. Both Roach and Chavez would later reveal that Julio's training camp was a complete disaster and probably the worst of his career. For his future fights, Chavez would promise to change several items related to his training, but never explained what changes would be made.

Chavez does like to train in Mexico and in the past he's been very resistant when it came to traveling for camp.

In January, Chavez will appear before the Nevada State Athletic Commission to receive his punishment for the marijuana use. He will receive a suspension which should expire in time for Julio to fight on planned HBO date in May.
