If Juan Manuel Marquez decides to remain in the lightweight division to defend his WBA/WBO titles against mandatory Michael Katsidis, then Marcos Maidana would become the logical opponent to face WBA 140-pound king Amir Khan on December 11, says Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer.

The other possibility is Victor Ortiz. Any talk of Ortiz would have to take place in the post-fight of September 18, when Ortiz faces former champion Vivian Harris on the Shane Mosley-Sergio Mora undercard at Staples Center in Los Angeles. Maidana has a keep-busy fight on August 28 against DeMarcus Corley in Argentina.

Based on the schedules, Schaefer says Maidana is the probable candidate between the two choices.

"Victor Ortiz is fighting on Sept. 18, as you know, against Vivian Harris, and it's certainly no gimme that Victor is going to win there, because Vivian Harris is a very dangerous opponent," said Schaefer. "In order to really lock in television dates and everything, you know, it seems like Maidana would be the most logical opponent."

Khan is pushing to have his next fight take place in the UK. If Maidana becomes the opponent, Schaefer says he is sure the fight will take place overseas.

"If it's Maidana, then I'm sure that the fight would take place in the United Kingdom. HBO has already indicated that if it's Maidana or Victor Ortiz that they would obviously televise it here in the United States," said Schaefer.
