Several ringside sources from the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas advised BoxingScene.com that Artie Pelullo, promoter for WBO middleweight champion Dmitry Pirog (17-0, 14KOs), and Lou DiBella, promoter for WBC champion Sergio Martinez (45-2, 24KOs), were exchanging text messages about a potential unification fight.

Pirog scored a spectacular fifth round knockout of previously undefeated Daniel Jacobs on Saturday night to capture the vacant WBO title. Martinez has a tentative HBO return date of October 2. The network is pushing for a rematch with Paul Williams, who is exploring a return to the welterweight division. After Pirog's performance, they might accept a unification with Martinez for the date.

BoxingScene spoke to DiBella, who confirmed the information from our Las Vegas sources.

"I called my good friend Artie to congratulate him on the win. We did exchange a few text messages. I thought Dmitry Pirog looked great. Martinez and Pirog would make for a very good fight," DiBella said.
