The planned world title fight of hard-hitting southpaw Michael Farenas (25-2-3, 22 KO’s) against undefeated WBO champion Roman Martinez (22-0-1, 13 KO’s) of Puerto Rico is being pursed despite the nasty cut suffered by Farenas in his clash with Arturo Gomez in Mexico on Sunday, Manila Time.

Filipino boxing hero Manny Pacquiao’s adviser Michael Koncz who also works closely with Top Rank promoter Bob Arum told BoxingScene.com, insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports in an overseas telephone conversation Monday that he would discuss the proposed title fight in a meeting with Arum in Las Vegas on Monday.

Koncz said the plan was to feature the Farenas-Martinez title fight alongside the rematch between undefeated WBO light flyweight champion Ivan Calderon (32-0-1, 6 KO’s) and Filipino Rodel Mayol (25-3-1, 19 KO’s) agreed upon earlier for September 12 in Puerto Rico.

Calderon salvaged a 6th round technical draw last June 19 at Madison Square Garden when a cut he suffered in the 4th round due to an accidental clash of heads worsened as Mayol began to pressure the champion and the fight was stopped.

Judge Tony Paolillo scored it 58-56 for Calderon, Steve Weisfeld had it a draw at 57-57 while Tom Schreck had Mayol ahead 58-56.

Koncz said Farenas, a protégé of former two division world champion Gerry Penalosa started off well and “ staggered Gomez  a couple of times in the first round and would have knocked him out if not for the bad cut caused by a head-butt.”

He said Farenas was “furious with the referee” for stopping the fight resulting in a 2nd round technical draw but revealed “it was the doctor who wanted the fight stopped” because of the bad cut on Farenas.

Koncz earlier told us in a telephone conversation from Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico that with an impressive showing against Gomez, Farenas would get a title shot at the undefeated WBO champion who, like Calderon,  is also a Puerto Rican.

Koncz said he will work on the title fight while Penalosa said he is hopeful that his protégé will get the title shot because “he’s ready.”

Conditioning expert Alex Ariza who got Filipino boxing hero Manny Pacquiao into tremendous shape for his fights against David Diaz, Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky “Hitman” Hatton told us some time ago that he’d seen Farenas work out and he was impressed by his power.

Farenas was making his second foray into Mexico having won an eighth round unanimous decision over Fermin De Los Santos in Aguascalientes on May 17, 2008.

Farenas made his US debut with a 2nd round knockout of Arturo Valenzuela on October 6, 2007 and followed with a 3rd round TKO over Baudel Cardenas. In his last fight on May 1 this year, Farenas ripped Walter Estrada, an experienced 34 year old southpaw with a record of 35-9  and 24 knockouts.
