At Staples Center in California, Marcos Maidana (26-1, 25KOs) was able to outlast Victor Ortiz (24-2, 19KOs) in a war of power punches to pick up a sixth round TKO victory to win the interim-WBA junior welterweight title.

The fight began with a fury. Maidana came out winging some bombs in the first round. Ortiz quickly began to exchange some hard punches with him. Ortiz caught Maidana with quick combination to send him down. Moments later it was Maidana with a hard right that sent Ortiz down on his back. The two fighters began to exchange hard power shots to close the round.

Both guys came out throwing more bombs in the second. Maidana buckled Ortiz in the first minute with a hard right. Ortiz stayed on the backfoot and allowed Maidana to go after him. Ortiz was hurt by an exchange and fired back with some bombs to send Maidana down for the second time in the fight. Maidana made it up but went back down for the third time when Ortiz clipped him with a combination of power shots.

The war was back on in the third, Maidana once again buckled Ortiz with some hard bombs in the first two minutes. Ortiz pressed the action in the final minute by pushing Maidana back with some hard shots. The fourth saw Maidana test Ortiz's body with some hard punches. Ortiz was feinting his way in to set up his hard punches. The two fighters were back on the attack in the fifth. Ortiz was getting in the better punches with his right hands. In the final minute, a vicious exchange of shots saw Maidana get the better of the action with monster punches. He cut Ortiz above the right eye and nearly closed the left.

At the sixth, Maidana went after Ortiz with power punches to send him down for a second time in the bout. A ringside doctor stopped the fight not long afterwards, feeling the cut above Ortiz's eye was too bad to allow the fight to continue.
