After Shane Mosley pulled off the performance of a lifetime by knocking out Antonio Margarito on January 24, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer would quickly state that he was planning to speak with the team of Floyd Mayweather Jr. to explore the possibility of a Mayweather-Mosley bout. Mayweather has been retired since mid-2008, but a month ago his adviser, Leonard Ellerbe, said Floyd had directed him to review potential fight offers.

Schaerfer spoke with Mayweather's manager Al Haymon, who told him that Floyd would not come out of retirement for a Mosley bout.

"I was told by [Mayweather's manager] Al Haymon that Floyd was not coming out of retirement to fight Shane Mosley. I feel bad for Shane. It's as if he looked too good in his last fight. It was the best performance of his career and maybe it made some guys not want to face him," said Schaefer to Sports Illustrated.

Some of Mosley's options include Andre Berto, Joshua Clottey and a rematch with Miguel Cotto.

"I have had a few preliminary conversations with [Cotto promoter] Bob Arum," said Schaefer. "I was told even before [the Margarito suspension] that Cotto preferred to fight Shane over Margarito. I'm sure we will talk some more."
