Promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank is moving on his instincts to put together a mega-bout between unbeaten champions Joe Calzaghe and Kelly Pavlik. Calzaghe is still trying to lock down a big name opponent for his November return. Pavlik and Roy Jones Jr. are the two frontrunners to fight Calzaghe.

As reported a few weeks ago, Arum has already held discussions with Frank Warren, promoter of Calzaghe. He plans to continue his talks with Warren in Atlantic City during the fight week for Pavlik's June 7 defense of the Ring/WBC/WBO middleweight titles against Gary Lockett, another fighter in Warren's stable.

The Lockett defense would be a good way to set up the potential bout because Lockett is trained by Calzaghe's father, Enzo. In the last two-weeks, Enzo and Jack Loew, trainer of Pavlik, have exchanged plenty of insults through the press.

Arum tells boxing writer Kevin Iole that a fight between Pavlik and Calzaghe is a history making event because Pavlik, the recognized middleweight champion with three belts at the weight, would stand a chance of simultaneously holding titles in three weight divisions by beating Calzaghe, holder of the WBA/WBC/WBO super middleweight titles and also the current Ring Magazine light heavyweight champion. Arum tells Iole the bout would take place at 168-pounds.

“It’s a fight that we’ve talked about and it’s a fight that may make a lot of sense,” Arum said. “Kelly has no problem fighting at 168 pounds. Obviously, Frank is looking for a big fight to put Joe in and Kelly would qualify there.”
