Latin boxing legend Roberto Duran believes that Canelo Alvarez should have been the rightful winner of the September clash with IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin.

Canelo (49-1-2, 34 KOs) and Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs) fought to a twelve round split draw at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, with a lot of controversy over which boxer actually deserved the victory.

There are now ongoing discussions to stage a rematch for next May, during Cinco De Mayo weekend.

According to Duran, he spoke with Canelo prior to the first meeting with Golovkin and gave him some words of confidence.

"When the Golovkin and Canelo fight came, I told Canelo not to worry," Duran said to ESPN Deportes.

"I told Canelo, do not worry that Triple G is coming to kill you because that's going to work in your favor. I told him to remember that a Mexican gives as good as he takes and that's how it was - Golovkin came to kill him. I said to Canelo, box him a little bit and you are going to win, you hit hard and he is going to deliver, and for me Canelo won."

As far as the rematch, Duran predicts that Canelo will do even better and even close out the contest by knockout.

"The rematch is coming. He already got to know him and he's going to look better in the rematch, and I think that he might even knock him out," Duran said.

Another former world champion, Rosendo Alvarez, agreed with Duran's prediction.

"Canelo will win, Canelo already knows that he can take GGG's punch, and Golovkin is a fighter who has many deficiencies when attacking. His attacks are not very effective, he misses a lot of punches. He has power but the power is overcome with intelligence, and Canelo fought the recent fight in a very smart manner...  he just needed to press a little more to take the victory," Alvarez said.
