According to Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar de la Hoya, the upcoming fight between Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. will be a breath of fresh air and necessary for the world of boxing.

He's so confident that it's going to be a great fight, that he believes the contest will crown a new idol in the sport.

Canelo (48-1-1, 34 KOs) and Chavez (50-2-1, 32 KOs) will collide on May 6th from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. HBO Pay-Per-View will carry the show.

The event has already been sold out for weeks, with over 20,000 fans snapping up the seats to watch the Mexican rivals collide after years of wondering if the fight would ever happen.

Because they were fighting two divisions apart, they agreed to a catch-weight of 164.5-pounds. Canelo will come up from 154, and Chavez Jr. will come down from 168.

"I feel that this is a rivalry like that of Marco Barrera and Érik Morales. This rivalry between Canelo and Chavez.... the winner is going to become the Mexican idol and will establish himself as the attraction of boxing world, which is a position that Canelo already has - but this fight will take him to another level, because we expect to sell a lot on pay-per-view," De La Hoya told ESPN Deportes.

"This is a fight that is sold out and that is an indication that people are interested in this fight and know that this fight will do well for boxing. For me the fact that it is sold out is an indication of the desire that people have for this fight, because whenever there are two Mexicans in the ring there is war."

De La Hoya explains that a loss to Chavez Jr. would be far more crippling for Canelo than if he lost to a non-Mexican boxer.

"You can not lose with a countryman. As Mexican Americans touched on me with Fernando Vargas, with Rafael Ruelas, with 'Chicanito' Hernández, everything is more personal when you go up against someone of the same race ... and it's because there is a lot pride at play," De La Hoya said.
