According to former two division world champion Sergio Martinez - we are not going to see Gennady Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs) vs. Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs) for a very long time.

Golovkin vs. Canelo is being negotiated for the fall, with the target being Mexican Independence Day weekend in September.

Both fighters are scheduled for action in the coming weeks. Golovkin will defend his WBC, WBA, IBO, IBF middleweight titles this coming Saturday night, against mandatory challenger Daniel Jacobs at New York's Madison Square Garden.

Canelo will be back in the ring on Cinco De Mayo weekend, when he fights fellow Mexican superstar Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on May 6th at a catch-weight of 164.5-pounds. That fight will happen at a sold-out T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Martinez has a connection in all of this - by way of the WBC title at 160-pounds. Back in 2014, Golovkin was pushing hard to fight him during that time period. Rather than face Golovkin, Martinez accepted a very lucrative fight against Miguel Cotto. It proved to be the final fight of Martinez's career, as Cotto knocked him out and captured the WBC belt.

Soon after that, the WBC made Golovkin the mandatory challenger to Cotto. The Puerto Rican star had no interest in that fight and paid a step-aside fee to move forward with a showdown against Canelo. Then Canelo captured the WBC belt with a twelve round decision over Cotto in November of 2015.

Then the WBC ordered Canelo to fight Golovkin and set down a firm date for a purse bid. The purse bid never happened, as Canelo vacated the title and moved back to 154-pounds. The WBC made Golovkin the full champion by default.

Even if Golovkin and Canelo win their upcoming fights, Martinez believes their showdown will not happen in the near future.

And he doesn't blame Canelo, he places the blame on the Mexican boxer's handlers, Golden Boy Promotions. He feels the promotional company will delay the fight as soon as possible - if it happens at all.

"He's not going to face Triple G for many years and he probably will not do it [at all]. And if he does do it, it's not going to be for 7 to 8 years or 5 years. I do not think he's going to face him - and it's not because of Canelo, but because of the people who handle him. It's logical that [his handlers] want to avoid Triple G," Martinez told ESPN Deportes.
