In the main event of "Viva Mexico" at the Arena Oasis in Cancun, Quintana Roo - former world champion Jhonny Gonzalez (62-10, 52KOs) once again showed off his brutal power with a first round knockout of Japanese contender Hirotsugu Yamamoto (19-13-2, 3KOs).

The card was organized jointly by Promociones del Pueblo and Cancun Boxing, Pepe Gomez, with the support of Cerveza Victoria, Playboy Mexico, and Grupo Oasis Quequi.

For Gonzalez it was his fourth fight since losing an upset majority decision last September to Jonathan Oquendo as part of the Floyd Mayweather-Andre Berto undercard at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Gonzalez has already fought twice in 2016 with stoppage wins over Christopher Martinez and Justin Savi.

Gonzalez was making the third defense of the International silver super featherweight championship of the World Boxing Council, which he won in December of last year by beating another Japanese fighter in Hurricane Futa.

Gonzalez hopes to continue racking up the wins until the sanctioning body will put him in position for a world title eliminator or a title shot. The current WBC champion in his division is countryman Francisco Vargas, who is currently out with injury. The mandatory challenger is another Mexican slugger, Miguel Roman.

Meanwhile, coming into this contestYamamoto had won three of his last four fights. The card was carried in Mexico by Televisa Deportes.
