Photos: Jason Sosa Gets Off The Deck, Stops Javier Fortuna

Jason Sosa got off the floor in the fifth round and pulled off a shocker by knocking out undefeated champion Javier Fortuna in the eleventh round to capture the WBA super featherweight world title in a fight held in Beijing, China. Photos by Sumio Yamada/WBA.

Sosa (19-4-1, 15 KOs), who dropped the champion in the tenth, put away Fortuna (29-1-1, 21 KOs) with a right hook that stopped him right in his tracks, and then he followed it with a left that sent him to the canvas in the eleventh, and although Fortuna stood up on his feet and beat the count he was clearly hurt and his legs were not under him, so the referee stopped the fight.

At the time of the stoppage, Fortuna was up on all three cards 95-92, 94-93 and 96-91.

The fatal eleventh round witnessed Fortuna caught by Sosa’s all-out attack and badly dropping near his corner for the second time. Though barely regaining his feet, the ref wisely saw him unfit to go on with shaky legs and then declared a dramatic stoppage for the jubilant new titlist.

It was the second defense for Fortuna after retaining the belt last September against Carlos Velazquez.

The event was part of the activities of the General Board Meeting of of the WBA. Sosa, who was coming off a draw with Jamaica's Nicholas Walters from last December.

In the co-featured attraction, Nehomar Cermeno (24-5-1, 13 KOs) of Venezuela picked up the WBA super bantamweight world title with a knockout of Jun Qui Xiao (20-3, 9 KOs) in the twelfth and final round.
