As previously reported on BoxingScene.com, World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman will not allow further postponements of the mandated fight between WBC middleweight champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (46-1-1, 32KOs) and WBA/IBO/IBF middleweight champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (35-0, 32KOs).

Last year, Miguel Cotto and Canelo were given permission to fight for the WBC title - on the promise that the winner would face Golovkin next.

Canelo won a twelve round unanimous decision to capture the belt, but he wasn't ready to face Golovkin just yet.

After negotiating with the WBC, the sanctioning body issued an order which allowed both boxers to take an interim bout - as long as they fought each other in the fall.

Golovkin had his interim-bout on Saturday night and knocked out IBF mandatory Dominic Wade in two rounds at The Forum in Los Angeles.

Canelo is scheduled to defend his belt on May 7th against Amir Khan (31-3, 19KOs) at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. If Canelo wins, he has 15 days to make a decision on whether or not he intends to fight Golovkin in the fall.

In more than one interview Canelo's promoter, Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions, said the fight with Golovkin needed to 'marinate' for a little while in order to make the contest even bigger for HBO Pay-Per-View.

Sulaiman has no issue with De La Hoya's position, but warns that his organization will take away Canelo's title if the Mexican superstar refuses to make his mandatory defense. In the event the title is taken away, then Golovkin will become the WBC middleweight champion.

"Oscar can say whatever he wants....it's his right to do so, but we are also within our rights to take the title away from his boxer if he does not meet [his obligation]," said Sulaiman.

Golovkin's trainer, Abel Sanchez, blames Golden Boy for delaying the contest.

"I do not think Canelo is afraid of Golovkin. I think more than anything it has to do with Canelo's promoter, Oscar de la Hoya. He's the one who is trying to avoid the fight," Sanchez said.
