Robert Guerrero refuses to blame a quick turnaround for his pedestrian performance against Aron Martinez in his last fight.

Guerrero barely beat Martinez in their 10-rounder June 6. The former four-division champion won a split decision over Martinez (20-4-1, 4 KOs), who dropped Guerrero in the fourth round, in a welterweight fight that occurred just three months after Guerrero (33-3-1, 18 KOs, 2 NC) absorbed a lot of punishment during a one-sided, unanimous-decision defeat to WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman (26-0, 22 KOs).

While numerous reporters and fans have questioned whether Guerrero returned to training camp too soon after the Thurman loss, Guerrero gave credit to Martinez, who upset Devon Alexander in his next fight four months later.

The 32-year-old Guerrero, meanwhile, took a long break following the Martinez match before agreeing to face undefeated Danny Garcia (31-0, 18 KOs) in a 12-round fight Saturday night at Staples Center in Los Angeles (FOX; 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT).

“I have no excuses,” Guerrero said during a recent conference call. “I came back. It was three months after the [Thurman] fight. … Aron Martinez is a tough guy. Everybody seen his last fight, what he did. He came out rough and tough, and did his job and pulled the upset off.

“I have no excuses. I went out there and got the job done. He gave me a tough fight. And you know what? I’m not gonna take anything away from Aron Martinez because he trained his butt off and did what he did, and got the job done. So I have no excuses for that fight. You’ve just got to get back on top of it and work hard.”
